Pokémon Black & White Abilities
Hidden Abilities change everything here. The Dream World handed out rare third abilities like Drizzle Politoed, while Gen 5 newcomers introduced Prankster, Moxie, Sheer Force, and Regenerator to the series for the first time.

Ability Spotlight
Prankster
Unova invented the fastest form of annoyance. Prankster gives non-damaging moves an extra stage of priority, so Whimsicott's tricks and the genies' status moves land before almost anything else can act. Gen 5 battles learned to fear cotton fluff, which tells you everything about how strong this is.

Sheer Force
Darmanitan hits like a truck, and Sheer Force removes the truck's brakes. Moves with secondary effects trade those effects for 30% more power, a bargain when the effect was just a small burn chance anyway. Raw damage over frills, which suits Unova's angriest ape perfectly.

Regenerator
Mienshao popularized a simple loop: attack, leave, come back healed. Regenerator restores a third of max HP on every switch-out, rewarding the hit-and-run style Mienshao was built for, and few habits pay off this reliably.

How Abilities Work in Black & White
Sheer Force cancels the Life Orb bill
Sheer Force users pay no Life Orb recoil on moves the ability boosts, one of the era's best hidden interactions. Gen 5 is full of these quiet ability-item handshakes, and finding them is half the fun of the generation.
Illusion turns party order into a bluff
Illusion sends Zoroark out disguised as your last party member, and the battle becomes a card trick. Slot order stops being cosmetic. No other ability asks you to think about your lineup this way.
New in Black & White
Gen 5 printed a huge ability class and, through Hidden Abilities, handed old species new ones at the same time. It is arguably the most influential debut list in the mechanic's history, and several of its entries still headline teams today.
Pokémon Abilities: Frequently Asked
What are Hidden Abilities in Pokémon Black and White?
A rare third ability outside the normal one or two a species carries. Generation 5 introduced the concept, and in Black and White these abilities were distributed mainly through the Dream World, an online companion service. A Hidden Ability often changes how a Pokémon is played entirely, not just slightly.
How did the Dream World distribute abilities?
Through a browser. Players synced a save to the Pokémon Global Link, explored the Dream World site, and befriended Pokémon that could then be collected in the Entralink with their Hidden Ability active. The service was shut down years ago, which made many of those early distributions scarce for a while.
Which Hidden Abilities from this generation became famous?
Politoed with Drizzle turned a forgettable Water type into the anchor of rain teams overnight. Ninetales with Drought did the same for sun, Dragonite gained Multiscale to halve damage at full health, and event Blaziken received Speed Boost, a combination strong enough to shape competitive formats for years.
What new standard abilities did Black and White add?
Gen 5 brought a deep class of new effects. Prankster gives status moves priority, Moxie snowballs Attack with every knockout, Sheer Force trades secondary effects for raw power, and Regenerator heals a Pokémon just for switching out. All four remain pillars of team building in every game since.
Can I still obtain these Hidden Abilities today?
Yes, just not through the original pipeline. The Dream World is offline, but later games opened other doors, including Hidden Grottoes in Black 2 and White 2, the Friend Safari in X and Y, and eventually the Ability Patch. Modern transfer services carry those abilities forward between games.
