No wild encounters for Grovyle in Sword & Shield. Bring Treecko over from Ruby, Emerald, or Brilliant Diamond, then level through the stages. Each step in the chain is laid out below.

How to Obtain Grovyle in Sword & Shield

  1. Treecko
    Step 1Obtain Treecko

    Catch in the wild in:

Then trade to Sword & Shield to continue the evolution chain.

    Also found in:

  2. Grovyle
    Step 2Grovyle
  • Grovyle is meant to evolve into Sceptile. At 405 BST, the stats aren't there for competitive play yet. Pre-evolution Pokemon rarely hold up against fully evolved threats.

  • Watch for Arcanine (Fire), Walrein (Ice), and Gengar (Poison) when using Grovyle. They all hit it super-effectively with STAB. Flying and Bug-type attackers are also a problem. With 5 weakness types, most competitive teams carry at least one counter.

  • Treecko evolves into Grovyle at level 16. Grovyle evolves into Sceptile at level 36. Grovyle is a middle-stage evolution in the Treecko line.

  • Overgrow strengthens grass moves to inflict 1.5× damage at 1/3 max HP or less — that's the one you want on Grovyle. Unburden is the hidden ability. Niche, but it has its uses.

  • Base 95 Speed is workable — faster than some, slower than many. On offense, Grovyle is a physical attacker with base 65 Attack. Defensively? Fragile — can't afford to take many hits.

  • Grovyle appears in 16 games, including Ruby & Sapphire, FireRed & LeafGreen, and Emerald.

Available in 16 titles since its debut in Ruby & Sapphire, Grovyle spans 7 generations of Pokemon games. It's accessible through catching or hatching as a base form in most mainline games.
