Clefable's normal typing gives it an immunity to Ghost. Only 1 weaknesses on top of that — it has plenty of safe switch-in opportunities. Magic Guard adds more value on top. A competitive option since Gen 1. It relies on priority moves or Scarf to keep up.
Clefable's spread isn't flashy. HP leads, Speed trails, 3 stats clear the bar. Very hard to catch and worth 3 HP EVs, on a fast 800K XP curve.
With its acute hearing, it can pick up sounds from far away. It usually hides in quiet places.
Its very sensitive ears let it distinguish distant sounds. As a result, it prefers quiet places.
Clefable Weakness
GoodClefable is weak to Fighting-type moves. On the flip side, it's immune to Ghost-type moves entirely. With 95 HP and balanced defenses, Clefable can afford to eat a neutral hit or two.
- Fairy type does not exist — Dragon has fewer checks
- Physical / Special split now per-move (introduced Gen IV)
Clefable doesn't evolve through normal leveling. You'll need an evolution item to get here from Cleffa's line. Breed this form to get Cleffa eggs (quick to hatch). Evolving from Cleffa gave Clefable the biggest boost in Sp.Atk (+50), bringing the total to 483 stats.
How to Evolve
Breed with Clefable to get Cleffa eggs easily using 35 partners from the Fairy egg group. Notable egg moves include Amnesia, Aromatherapy, Belly Drum and 8 more.
This is a pure walling set. Leftovers provides passive recovery each turn so Clefable sticks around, and the Careful nature reinforces special wall. Soft-Boiled handles sustain while Magic Guard does work passively.

Blizzard and Dream Eater bring the raw damage. But Clefable also picks up coverage across 14 types from TMs, making it tough to find a safe switch. You're not locked into one angle here.

Cleffa doesn't appear in the wild, so the 3-stage path to Clefable starts at the nursery. Catch Clefairy first, breed for Cleffa, then evolve through the chain.
How to Obtain Clefable in HeartGold & SoulSilver
The path to Clefable starts with Cleffa at Lv. 8+ via walking encounters. 1 catchable stage total, with locations listed for each one below.

Step 3Clefable ✓
Don't let Clefable's 483 base stat total fool you. Magic Guard is what makes it tick — it punches way above its weight class. We rate it A-Tier.
Clefable's biggest threats include Machamp (Fighting), all carrying super-effective STAB moves. Only 1 weakness means fewer dedicated counters to worry about.
Run Magic Guard on Clefable. It's the ability that defines how you build around it and the main reason it holds a competitive niche. Clefable also gets Cute Charm and Unaware, but they don't compare.
Clefable fills the balanced role. It's a special attacker with base 95 Sp. Atk. At base 60 Speed, it won't be moving first often. And it's enough bulk to take a hit or two.
Clefable appears in 22 games, including Yellow, Red & Blue, and Gold & Silver.
Clefable has been part of the series since Red & Blue, appearing in 22 titles across all 9 generations. As a Gen 1 original, it's one of the most consistently available Pokemon in the franchise.
