Is Altaria Good in X & Y Playthrough?
Dragon/Flying at level 35 with AbilityNatural Cure. Wild or evolved from Swablu. Decent bulk and AbilityNatural Cure heals status. Handles Drasna in the Dragon mirror. The new Fairy type is a problem though, since Valerie and Diantha's Gardevoir threaten it.

How to Get Shiny Altaria in X & Y
Altaria soars over the grass of Route 21, so a Poke Radar chain kept unbroken there gradually improves the shiny odds. Compare Shiny Altaria odds across every game
X & Y Shiny Altaria Calculator
4 MethodsThe best route is PokeRadar Chain at full boosts, about 1 in 100 on each try. Tune it below.
PokeRadar Chain: Chain shaking-grass patches without breaking the combo. The rate peaks at a chain of 40.
Horde Encounter: Every horde throws five Pokemon at you at once, so each battle rolls five shiny chances in one encounter.
Masuda Method: Breed with a parent from a different-language game. Works on any breedable line.
Full Odds: Walk through grass, surf, or fish. Every encounter is its own independent shiny roll.
How many you have done, or plan to do.
| Chance | Encounters |
|---|---|
| 10%lucky few | 11 |
| 25%one in four | 29 |
| 50%coin flip | 69 |
| 90%very likely | 230 |
How is this calculated?
Every encounter has the same shiny chance, the Shiny Odds Per Try shown above. Each one is a separate roll that does not care how many you have already done, so the more you hunt, the higher your overall chance of at least one shiny. The formula below turns your odds and your number of tries into that combined chance.
chance after N tries = 1 − (1 − p)^N, where p = 1 / odds per try
Example at 1 in 8,192 (classic full odds): about 864 encounters for a 10 percent chance, 5,678 for 50 percent, and 18,862 for 90 percent.
The table above flips that around: it shows how many encounters it takes to reach a 10, 25, 50, and 90 percent chance at your current odds. Turning on boosts like the Shiny Charm, sandwiches, or chains improves your odds, so the encounter numbers drop.
These are estimates, not promises. Most games have no pity counter, meaning no guaranteed shiny no matter how many you hunt, so even Very Likely is not guaranteed: some hunters find one early, others go well past that point.

Altaria Weakness
Type-wise, Altaria takes extra damage from Ice, Rock, Dragon, and Fairy. Watch out for Ice attacks, those deal 4x damage. Ground moves do nothing thanks to a full immunity. 5 resistances help offset the weaknesses.
| Damage | Types |
|---|---|
| 4x (Critical) | Ice |
| 2x (Weak) | Rock, Dragon, Fairy |
| 0.5x (Resist) | Fire, Water, Fighting, Bug |
| 0.25x (Resist) | Grass |
| 0x (Immune) | Ground |

Altaria X & Y Guide
In X & Y, Altaria can Mega Evolve into Mega Altaria. That's 590 BST, up from 490. The stat redistribution often changes its best role. Mega Stone required, one per battle.
In X & Y, Altaria plays as a support. Speed is middling, so pick your spots carefully.
In X & Y, Altaria pairs best with Gardevoir Mega, Jirachi, and Azumarill. Gardevoir Mega has Good synergy and covers what Altaria can't handle on its own.
Altaria's hidden ability is Cloud Nine. It negates all effects of weather, but does not prevent the weather itself. Situational compared to Natural Cure.
In X & Y, Timid is the go-to nature for Altaria. That's +Speed / -Attack. Pair it with 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe EVs. Fits the support role.
Game Availability
Since debuting in Ruby & Sapphire, Altaria has appeared in 16 titles over 7 generations. Along the way, it received a Mega form in Generation 6, keeping it relevant across different competitive metas.
