Is Graveler Good in FireRed & LeafGreen Playthrough?
Graveler with AbilityRock Head takes zero recoil from hard-hitting Normal moves. Rock/Ground handles Surge, Blaine, and contributes against Lance's Aerodactyl. Trade evolution into Golem is the target. Graveler's Defense carries it through the story even without trading.
Geodude tanks Brock's Tackle and Rock Tomb without much trouble. Rock Throw matches Brock's Onix blow for blow, and Brock's own Geodude goes down faster than yours does.
Misty's Staryu and Starmie both land MoveWater Pulse on Geodude for four-times damage. MoveRock Throw chips them back, but Geodude won't survive a second hit without a Potion. Lead an Electric-type instead.
Graveler's Ground immunity erases every Electric attack Surge throws. MoveRock Throw chunks Raichu and Voltorb, with only MoveSonic Boom's flat 20 damage chipping through.
Every Grass move Erika's Vileplume, Victreebel, and Tangela carry hits Graveler for four-times damage. MoveMagnitude lands at neutral on their Grass-Poison half, not double, so Graveler can trade hits but can't press an advantage. Bring a Fire-type.
MoveMagnitude doubles on every one of Koga's Poison team. Golem walks through Weezing and Muk without issue, but watch for Koffing's MoveSelf-Destruct, a 200 BP Normal move that'll dent even Golem's bulk.
Venomoth takes four-times damage from MoveRock Blast, and MoveMagnitude handles Kadabra and Mr. Mime. Alakazam's the problem: its MovePsychic still lands at neutral on Golem, but it hits harder than anything else on Sabrina's team.
Blaine's Fire team all take MoveRock Blast and MoveRock Throw for double damage. Fire bounces off Golem's Rock half at half strength, so even Arcanine's Fire Blast won't close the gap.
Golem out-tanks Giovanni in the Ground-type mirror. MoveEarthquake lands double on Rhyhorn, Nidoking, and Nidoqueen through their Rock or Ground halves, but Giovanni's whole team has Earthquake back, so every exchange hits hard both ways.
Every member of Lorelei's team carries Water or Ice moves that hit Golem for two-times or four-times damage, and MoveRock Blast doubles through their Ice half. It's a race to land the first knockout.
MoveEarthquake one-shots both of Bruno's Onix. The Fighting trio is the harder stretch: Hitmonchan, Hitmonlee, and Machamp all hit Golem for double damage with MoveSky Uppercut, MoveBrick Break, or MoveCross Chop. Machamp's MoveBulk Up turn makes the follow-up Cross Chop sting even more.
Agatha's Sludge Bomb and Poison Fang are resisted by Golem, and MoveRock Blast doubles on Golbat through its Flying half. MoveEarthquake only hits Arbok, since Gengar and Haunter's AbilityLevitate plus Golbat's Flying typing make the rest Ground-immune. Stick with Rock moves for four of the five.
Gyarados, Aerodactyl, and Dragonite all take MoveRock Blast for double damage through their Flying half. MoveEarthquake only hits Lance's two Dragonair, since the other three fly over it. Gyarados's Hyper Beam is the biggest single swing to weather, but a clean Rock Blast crit takes it out first.
Golem trades evenly with Blue's mixed team. MoveEarthquake handles Rhydon and Alakazam, Rock Blast drops Pidgeot and Arcanine, but Blastoise's MoveHydro Pump and Exeggutor's MoveGiga Drain both hit Golem for four-times damage if they get a free switch.

Graveler Weakness
Graveler's Rock/Ground typing leaves it vulnerable to Water, Grass, Ice, Fighting, Ground, and Steel. Water and Grass hits land at 4x, so they're the biggest threat. It shrugs off Electric-type attacks completely. It resists 5 types, giving it decent defensive coverage. Graveler's physical bulk (base 115 Def) helps cushion physical weakness hits, but special attackers are the bigger threat.
| Damage | Types |
|---|---|
| 4x (Critical) | Water, Grass |
| 2x (Weak) | Ice, Fighting, Ground, Steel |
| 0.5x (Resist) | Normal, Fire, Flying, Rock |
| 0.25x (Resist) | Poison |
| 0x (Immune) | Electric |
- Dark and Steel types added — Fairy does not exist yet
- Moves are Physical or Special based on type, not per move

Graveler FireRed & LeafGreen Guide
No. Graveler only evolves into Golem through a real trade. There is no in-game alternative in FireRed & LeafGreen. Trade needs a Game Boy Advance link cable and a second GBA running another Gen 3 game (FireRed, LeafGreen, Ruby, Sapphire, or Emerald). Trade Graveler to a friend, then have them trade it back. The 2026 Switch re-release supports the same trade through local wireless on the Pokemon Center 2F Wireless Club, with no cables required.
Game Availability
Graveler first appeared in Red & Blue and spans 20 games across 10 generations. It later gained an Alolan form in Generation 7, adding new dimensions to its competitive identity.
