Ice/Dragon with 130 Sp. Atk but no physical Ice STAB in Gen V (Black & White). Stuck between tiers. Too strong below but the movepool held it back above.
Special Attacker Moveset
- Earth Power
- Roost
- Ice Beam
- Substitute

Between tiers again in Gen VI (X & Y). Roost gave recovery and Ice Beam hit hard, but Dragon/Ice defensive typing had too many weaknesses to justify.
Special Attacker Moveset
- Ice Beam
- Earth Power
- Roost
- Substitute

Three gens stuck between tiers in Gen VII (Sun & Moon). Z-Freeze Shock gave a one-time physical Ice nuke, but the base set was still limited.
Utility Moveset
- Ice Beam
- Earth Power
- Roost
- Substitute
Recommended Teammates
Rose to the restricted format in Gen VIII (Sword & Shield). Dynamax boosted its bulk enough to set up Dragon Dance. 130 Sp. Atk and 130 Attack finally had room to work.

Base Stats
Raw Attack carries Kyurem's bulk more than the defenses do. Defense barely registers. But that HP pool covers for it. A near-impossible to catch Boundary Pokemon that yields 3 HP and Attack and Sp. Atk EVs on a slow 1.25M XP grind.
The sameness of Zekrom’s and Kyurem’s genes allowed Kyurem to absorb Zekrom. Kyurem can now use the power of both electricity and ice.
Kyurem Guide
Kyurem is a Legendary Pokemon rated A-Tier. At 660 BST, it hits hard. It excels as a pivot. Base 130 Attack stands out.
Kyurem's biggest threats include Hitmonlee (Fighting), Tyranitar (Rock), and Garchomp (Dragon), all carrying super-effective STAB moves. Steel and Fairy-type attackers are also a problem. With 5 weakness types, most competitive teams carry at least one counter. Kyurem has enough bulk to absorb a hit, but don't push the matchup. Pivot to a teammate that resists.
Pressure is the go-to ability for Kyurem. It increases the PP cost of moves targetting the Pokémon by one. It's Kyurem's only ability.
Base 95 Speed is workable. Faster than some, slower than many. On offense, Kyurem is a mixed attacker with base 130 Attack and 130 Sp. Atk. Defensively? Tanky enough to absorb a few hits. Best used as a pivot.
Best way to handle Kyurem: Super-effective STAB from faster Pokemon is the simplest answer. Fighting, Rock, and Dragon-type attackers hit hardest.
Game Availability
First obtainable in Black & White, Kyurem has been featured in 8 titles across 6 generations. Legendary status means a single encounter per playthrough in most games.
