Attack and Defense carry most of Grotle's stat budget. Speed's the obvious dump stat. Tough to catch and yields 2 Attack and Defense EVs. Follows a 1.06M XP medium-slow curve.
Appears where there is clean spring water. The fruit that grows on the shrubs on its shell is sweet, nutritious, and truly delicious.
Grotle is weak to Fire, Ice, Poison, Flying, and Bug. 4 resistances help offset the weaknesses. That's a lot of weak spots to cover so team support is important.

Partway through Turtwig's chain. Grotle still has another evolution ahead before reaching Torterra. For breeding, average hatch time with plenty of partners via two egg groups. Attack has grown the most so far (+21), but there's still another 120 stats to gain in the final evolution. View every chain in the Evolution Chart.
How to Evolve
Grotle's job is getting Stealth Rock up and staying on the field. Eviolite provides a bulk boost that only works before full evolution, Shellarmor helps it stick around, and max HP and Defense EVs prioritize longevity. Synthesis keeps it healthy between hits.

Moves
TMs carry this one. Grotle learns Leaf Storm and Solar Beam naturally for STAB, but the offensive range comes almost entirely from technical machines. Normal and Dark and beyond give it real matchup play.
Level-Up Moves
TM Moves
Egg Moves
Tutor Moves
Not a lot to pick from. Grotle gets Leaf Blade and Energy Ball for same-type damage, and Normal and Dark coverage and more rounds things out. You're building around what's available rather than choosing from a deep bench.
Egg moves make a real difference. Grotle gets Amnesia and Body Slam exclusively through breeding, filling gaps that TMs and level-up can't touch. Normal and Dark coverage and more rounds out the picture alongside Leaf Storm and Solar Beam.

Grotle is meant to evolve into Torterra. At 405 BST, the stats aren't there for competitive play yet. Pre-evolution Pokemon rarely hold up against fully evolved threats.
Grotle's biggest threats include Charizard (Fire), Cloyster (Ice), and Crobat (Poison), all carrying super-effective STAB moves. Flying and Bug-type attackers are also a problem. With 5 weakness types, most competitive teams carry at least one counter. At base 36 Speed, Grotle won't outrun any of these threats so switching to a resist is usually the safer play.
Overgrow is the go-to ability for Grotle. It strengthens grass moves to inflict 1.5× damage at 1/3 max HP or less. Its hidden ability Shell Armor can work in specific setups.
Base 36 Speed is low. Priority moves or Trick Room are the way to go. On offense, Grotle is a physical attacker with base 89 Attack. Defensively? Enough bulk to take a hit or two. Best used as a trick room.
Available in 12 titles since its debut in Diamond & Pearl, Grotle spans 7 generations of Pokemon games. It's accessible through catching or hatching as a base form in a solid number of games.
