Grotle sits in the middle of its evolution line — stronger than Turtwig but not yet at full power. Most trainers push through to Torterra as fast as possible. 5 type weaknesses to keep in mind. Known as the Grove Pokemon.
Attack and Defense carry most of Grotle's stat budget. Speed's the obvious dump stat. Tough to catch and yields 2 Attack and Defense EVs. Follows a 1.06M XP medium-slow curve.
It knows where pure water wells up. It carries fellow Pokémon there on its back.
Grotle Weakness
FragileGrotle is weak to Fire, Ice, Poison, Flying, and Bug-type moves. 4 resistances help offset the weaknesses. That's a lot of weak spots to cover so team support is important.
- Fairy type does not exist — Dragon has fewer checks
- Physical / Special split now per-move (introduced Gen IV)
Partway through Turtwig's chain. Grotle still has another evolution ahead before reaching Torterra. For breeding, average hatch time with plenty of partners via two egg groups. Attack has grown the most so far (+21), but there's still another 120 stats to gain in the final evolution.
How to Evolve
Breed with Grotle to get Turtwig eggs easily using 57 partners from the Plant and Monster egg groups. Notable egg moves include Amnesia, Body Slam, Double-Edge and 12 more.

Egg moves make a real difference. Grotle gets Amnesia and Body Slam exclusively through breeding, filling gaps that TMs and level-up can't touch. Normal and Dark coverage and more rounds out the picture alongside Leaf Storm and Solar Beam.

Step 2Grotle ✓
Grotle is meant to evolve into Torterra. At 405 BST, the stats aren't there for competitive play yet. Pre-evolution Pokemon rarely hold up against fully evolved threats.
Grotle's biggest threats include Charizard (Fire), Cloyster (Ice), and Crobat (Poison), all carrying super-effective STAB moves. Flying and Bug-type attackers are also a problem. With 5 weakness types, most competitive teams carry at least one counter. At base 36 Speed, Grotle won't outrun any of these threats so switching to a resist is usually the safer play.
Overgrow is the go-to ability for Grotle. It strengthens grass moves to inflict 1.5× damage at 1/3 max HP or less. Its hidden ability Shell Armor can work in specific setups.
Base 36 Speed is low. Priority moves or Trick Room are the way to go. On offense, Grotle is a physical attacker with base 89 Attack. Defensively? Enough bulk to take a hit or two. Best used as a trick room.
Grotle appears in 12 games, including Platinum, HeartGold & SoulSilver, and Diamond & Pearl.
Available in 12 titles since its debut in Diamond & Pearl, Grotle spans 6 generations of Pokemon games. It's accessible through catching or hatching as a base form in a solid number of games.
