Grotle sits in the middle of its evolution line — stronger than Turtwig but not yet at full power. Most trainers push through to Torterra as fast as possible. 5 type weaknesses to keep in mind. Known as the Grove Pokemon.

Attack and Defense carry most of Grotle's stat budget. Speed's the obvious dump stat. Tough to catch and yields 2 Attack and Defense EVs. Follows a 1.06M XP medium-slow curve.

Grotle Weakness

Fragile

Grotle is weak to Fire, Ice, Poison, Flying, and Bug-type moves. 4 resistances help offset the weaknesses. That's a lot of weak spots to cover so team support is important.

Partway through Turtwig's chain. Grotle still has another evolution ahead before reaching Torterra. For breeding, average hatch time with a decent partner pool via two egg groups. Attack has grown the most so far (+21), but there's still another 120 stats to gain in the final evolution.

Egg moves make a real difference. Grotle gets Amnesia and Body Slam exclusively through breeding, filling gaps that TMs and level-up can't touch. Normal and Dark coverage and more rounds out the picture alongside Leaf Storm and Solar Beam.

No wild encounters for Grotle. The 2-stage line runs through Turtwig, which you can catch but it's a rare spawn from the locations below. Evolve at level 18 once you've got the levels.

  2. Grotle
    Step 2Grotle
  • Grotle is meant to evolve into Torterra. At 405 BST, the stats aren't there for competitive play yet. Pre-evolution Pokemon rarely hold up against fully evolved threats.

  • Grotle's biggest threats include Charizard (Fire), Cloyster (Ice), and Crobat (Poison), all carrying super-effective STAB moves. Flying and Bug-type attackers are also a problem. With 5 weakness types, most competitive teams carry at least one counter. At base 36 Speed, Grotle won't outrun any of these threats so switching to a resist is usually the safer play.

  • Turtwig evolves into Grotle at level 18. Grotle evolves into Torterra at level 32. Grotle is a middle-stage evolution in the Turtwig line.

  • Overgrow is the go-to ability for Grotle. It strengthens grass moves to inflict 1.5× damage at 1/3 max HP or less. Its hidden ability Shell Armor can work in specific setups.

  • Base 36 Speed is low. Priority moves or Trick Room are the way to go. On offense, Grotle is a physical attacker with base 89 Attack. Defensively? Enough bulk to take a hit or two. Best used as a trick room.

  • Grotle appears in 12 games, including Platinum, HeartGold & SoulSilver, and Diamond & Pearl.

Available in 12 titles since its debut in Diamond & Pearl, Grotle spans 6 generations of Pokemon games. It's accessible through catching or hatching as a base form in a solid number of games.
