Its three heads bob separately up and down to loosen the soil nearby, making it easier for it to burrow.
In battle, it digs through the ground and strikes the unsuspecting foe from an unexpected direction.
Dugtrio's Ground typing leaves it vulnerable to Water, Grass, and Ice. It shrugs off Electric-type attacks completely. At base 120 Speed, Dugtrio outspeeds most threats and doesn't need to tank what it can outrun.

Breed with Dugtrio to get Diglett eggs easily using 206 partners from the Ground egg group. Notable egg moves include Ancient Power, Final Gambit, Headbutt and 2 more.
One guaranteed turn is all Dugtrio needs. Focus Sash buys it, max Attack and Speed EVs make it count, and Sandforce adds something extra. The goal: deal early damage and deal damage with Earthquake. Normal coverage gives it play beyond just the lead turn.

Sand Veil increases evasion to 1.25× during a sandstorm. That's the one you want on Dugtrio. Sand Force is the hidden ability. Niche, but it has its uses. Arena Trap works too if your team needs something different.
