WINSTON HERO COUNTERS

Winston dives your backline, drops Barrier Projector, and tries to finish a squishy before Jump Pack comes back. Counter him by grouping up so his Tesla Cannon splits damage across targets, killing him faster than he kills anyone. Reaper hard-counters the dive with shotgun burst and lifesteal. If your team spreads too thin, Winston picks you apart one by one.

Winston's top counters are Ana, Sombra, and Tracer.

FAQ

  • Reaper, Roadhog, and Bastion counter Winston by punishing his dives. Reaper shreds his 500 HP at close range with shotgun lifesteal. Roadhog hooks him out of Primal Rage or catches him after Jump Pack. Bastion in Assault mode kills Winston faster than Barrier Projector can absorb.

  • Group up. Winston isolates solo targets, especially supports standing away from their team. If you stick with at least one teammate, his Tesla Cannon damage gets split across multiple targets and he dies before getting a kill. Call out his Jump Pack cooldown too. Six seconds is a long wait.

  • Winston deals low sustained damage. Tesla Cannon does 60 DPS, which is bottom-tier for tanks. He relies on finishing weak targets, not winning long fights. Beam heroes and high-burst damage eat through his large hitbox before he can escape.

  • Zarya punishes Winston dives. She bubbles his target, he feeds her 40 charge, and high-energy Zarya melts his 500 HP pool. Roadhog hooks him out of jump pack or catches him mid-Primal Rage. D.Va can also peel for supports by boosting into his dive and contesting.

  • Sombra is the hardest DPS counter. Hack strips Jump Pack and Barrier Projector, leaving Winston as a slow 500 HP target with no escape. Venture and Anran also punish his dives with burst damage that overwhelms his barrier before he can finish a target.

  • Ana is the definitive support counter. Sleep Dart stops his dives cold, Biotic Grenade cancels all healing during Primal Rage, and she can peel for herself from range. Zenyatta Discord Orb on a diving Winston makes the entire team melt him.
