Sword and Shield's Galar Pokedex trades Mega Evolution and Z-Moves for Dynamax. Any Pokemon can Dynamax for three turns of boosted HP and Max Moves, with certain species getting unique Gigantamax forms on top. The Wild Area gives you strong catches early. Dragapult at 600 BST and 142 Speed is the pseudo-legendary. DLC adds the Isle of Armor and Crown Tundra rosters. Filter by type to compare what's available.

How to access additional Pokemon in Sword & Shield

Galar starts at 400 Pokemon. Max Raid Battles in the Wild Area are the main source for Hidden Abilities and Gigantamax forms that don't appear in regular encounters.

Two DLC packs expand the dex. Isle of Armor adds 211 species, Crown Tundra adds 210, and Dynamax Adventures in Crown Tundra let you catch one of each legendary from past generations. Pokemon HOME handles anything else that's coded into the game but doesn't appear in a Galar dex.

  • The base game has about 400. DLC adds more: Isle of Armor and Crown Tundra bring the total to around 664. Not every Pokemon from past generations is in SwSh. This was the first mainline game to cut the national dex.

  • Dynamax makes a Pokemon giant for three turns, doubling its HP and turning moves into Max Moves with bonus effects. Gigantamax is a special version for certain species that changes their appearance and gives unique G-Max Moves. Any Pokemon can Dynamax, but only specific ones Gigantamax.

  • Scorbunny is the top pick. Cinderace with Libero turns into whatever type it's about to attack with, so every move gets STAB. It's basically the Fire-type Greninja. Grookey's Rillaboom brings Grassy Terrain support, and Sobble's Inteleon is a glass cannon sniper.

  • A large open zone between cities where Pokemon roam the overworld. You can see them before engaging, and their levels scale with your badges. Strong Pokemon appear early, which lets you build diverse teams faster than in linear-route games. Weather changes what Pokemon appear.

  • Generation 8, released in 2019 for the Nintendo Switch. First mainline Pokemon game on a home console. Introduced Dynamax/Gigantamax, the Wild Area, Max Raid Battles, and the Galar region (based on the UK).

  • Sword gets Zacian, Sirfetch'd, Braviary, and Gothitelle. Shield gets Zamazenta, Galarian Ponyta (Psychic), Mandibuzz, and Reuniclus. Gym leaders also differ: Sword has Bea (Fighting) and Gordie (Rock); Shield has Allister (Ghost) and Melony (Ice).
