Sun and Moon's Alola Pokedex replaces gyms with Island Trials and Totem Pokemon. Z-Moves give every Pokemon one big nuke per battle. Alolan forms turn Gen 1 classics like Ninetales (now Ice/Fairy) into new typings entirely. No Mega Stones until postgame. Use the type filter to browse Alolan forms and new Gen 7 species side by side.

Showing all 802 Pokemon that can exist in Sun & Moon, including transfers from other games.

How to access additional Pokemon in Sun & Moon

Alola's dex spans 302 Pokemon across four island sub-dexes (Melemele, Akala, Ula'ula, Poni). SOS battles are the big new tool: when a wild Pokemon calls for help, the ally can be a species that doesn't show up through normal encounters, sometimes carrying its Hidden Ability.

Alolan forms give Kanto classics completely different typings. Ninetales becomes Ice/Fairy. Marowak goes Fire/Ghost. These only exist in Alola. After the story, Looker's Ultra Beast questline adds exclusive catches. Transfers from older games round out the full 802.

  • 802 total. The Alola Pokedex is split into four island-specific dexes covering around 300 Pokemon available during the story. The rest require trading or transferring from other games via Pokemon Bank.

  • Z-Moves are powered-up attacks you can use once per battle. A Pokemon needs to hold a Z-Crystal matching its type (or a species-specific crystal). Offensive Z-Moves deal massive damage, and support Z-Moves boost stats or apply unique effects. Every type has a Z-Crystal, so any Pokemon can use one.

  • Litten evolves into Incineroar (Fire/Dark) with Intimidate, which is great for the Totem fights. Rowlet's Decidueye (Grass/Ghost) is unique but a bit slow. Popplio's Primarina (Water/Fairy) has the best typing of the three. All are viable.

  • Alolan forms are regional variants of Gen 1 Pokemon that adapted to the Alola region. Alolan Ninetales is Ice/Fairy instead of Fire. Alolan Marowak is Fire/Ghost instead of Ground. They have different types, stats, abilities, and movepools. Only Kanto Pokemon got Alolan forms.

  • Gen 7. Nintendo 3DS, 2016. Sun and Moon ditched the gym formula for Island Trials and Totem Pokemon. Z-Moves and Alolan forms debuted here. The Alola region is based on Hawaii, and the pacing is story-heavy compared to older entries.

  • Island Trials replace traditional gyms. Each trial is a challenge (finding items, answering questions, battling through an area) ending in a fight against a Totem Pokemon, a buffed wild Pokemon with stat boosts and ally support. After clearing all trials on an island, you battle the island's Kahuna. Four islands, seven trials.
