ALL GOLD & SILVER POKEMON

Gold and Silver's Pokedex covers 251 Pokemon across the Johto and Kanto regions. Gen 2 split the old Special stat into Sp. Atk and Sp. Def, added Dark and Steel types to counter Psychic, and introduced breeding and held items. The time-of-day system means some Pokemon only appear at night or during the morning. Use the filters to browse by type, generation, or stats.

FAQ

  • 251. That's 100 new Johto Pokemon added to the original 151 from Kanto. The game spans two regions, so you encounter Pokemon from both generations during the story. Some Gen 1 Pokemon only appear in Kanto after beating the Elite Four.

  • Gold gets Mankey, Growlithe, Spinarak, Teddiursa, Gligar, and Mantine. Silver gets Vulpix, Meowth, Ledyba, Phanpy, Delibird, and Skarmory. Plus the box legendaries: Ho-Oh in Gold, Lugia in Silver.

  • Cyndaquil is the safest pick. Typhlosion has good Speed and Sp. Atk, and Fire coverage is hard to find early. Totodile hits hard physically but suffers from the Gen 2 issue: Water is a special type, so its Attack stat doesn't apply to STAB moves. Chikorita is the weakest start by far, since Grass is resisted by most early gyms.

  • Dark and Steel. Dark type finally gives Psychic a real weakness and counter. Steel resists almost everything and tanks hits. Umbreon and Tyranitar are the standout Dark types. Steelix and Scizor make Steel immediately relevant.

  • Generation 2, released in 1999 in Japan and 2000 in North America for the Game Boy Color. Added breeding, held items, a day/night cycle, two new types (Dark and Steel), and split the Special stat into Sp. Atk and Sp. Def.

  • Yes. After beating the Johto Elite Four, the entire Kanto region opens up with 8 more gym leaders to challenge. It's the same map from Red and Blue, updated for Gen 2. Clearing all 16 badges unlocks the fight against Red on Mt. Silver.
