While most trainers evolve Phanpy into Donphan immediately, the unevolved form has a niche with Eviolite boosting its defenses. Electric moves can't touch it, and only 3 types hit it super-effectively. Been around since Gen 2.

Phanpy's spread isn't flashy. HP leads, Sp. Atk trails, 1 stats clear the bar. Common in the wild and worth 1 HP EV, on a medium-fast 1M XP curve.

As a sign of affection, it bumps with its snout. However, it is so strong, it may send you flying.

Fire Red

It swings its long snout around playfully, but because it is so strong, this can be dangerous.

Phanpy Weakness

Avg

Phanpy's Ground typing leaves it vulnerable to Water, Grass, and Ice moves. It shrugs off Electric-type attacks completely. 3 weaknesses is about average, nothing too hard to play around.

The natural movepool does the job, but Ancient Power and Body Slam from the egg pool give Phanpy something extra.

  • Phanpy isn't fully evolved, so it's not built for competitive play. You'll want to evolve it into Donphan to unlock its full potential. At 330 BST, it's a stepping stone rather than a team anchor.

  • Watch for Starmie (Water), Venusaur (Grass), and Cloyster (Ice) when using Phanpy. They all hit it super-effectively with STAB. At base 40 Speed, Phanpy won't outrun any of these threats so switching to a resist is usually the safer play.

  • Phanpy evolves into Donphan at level 25. Phanpy is the base form of this evolutionary line.

  • Pickup picks up other Pokémon's used and Flung held items — that's the one you want on Phanpy. Sand Veil is the hidden ability. Niche, but it has its uses.

  • Phanpy fills the balanced role. It's a physical attacker with base 60 Attack. Base 40 Speed is low. Priority moves or Trick Room are the way to go.

  • Phanpy appears in 16 games, including Gold & Silver, Crystal, and Ruby & Sapphire.

Phanpy first appeared in Gold & Silver and has been available in 16 games across 8 generations. Obtainable through catching or hatching as a base form in most titles where it appears.
