Almost nobody uses Spearow in battle. It exists to evolve into Fearow, which is a completely different story. Get it there and you won't regret it. Been around since Gen 1. Ground and Ghost moves can't touch it, and only 3 types hit it super-effectively.
Spearow's spread isn't flashy. Speed leads, Defense trails, 0 stats clear the bar. Easy to catch and worth 1 Speed EV, on a medium-fast 1M XP curve.
Eats bugs in grassy areas. It has to flap its short wings at high speed to stay airborne.
Spearow Weakness
GoodElectric, Ice, and Rock-type moves hit Spearow for super-effective damage. The upside? Ground and Ghost-type moves can't touch it at all.
- Only 15 types exist — Dark, Steel, and Fairy are absent
- Ghost has no effect on Psychic (a known bug, fixed in Gen II)
- Special stat governs both offense and defense — no Sp.Atk / Sp.Def split
You'll evolve Spearow into Fearow the traditional way. This Normal/Flying type doesn't breed despite having a chain ahead. The evolved forms gain up to 180 total stats over Spearow.
How to Evolve
Best Build
Gen 1 build content has limited support (no abilities, held items, or natures).
Try selecting a different game/generation filter, or check back later.
Without TMs, Spearow's movepool is bare bones. With them, you get limited coverage on top of Sky Attack and Double-Edge for STAB. The natural kit handles basics, but TMs are doing the real work.
Level-Up Moves
TM Moves
Egg Moves
Tutor Moves
Spearow is available from early-game routes onward at high spawn rates. 20 encounter spots give you plenty of options. Grab one early and it'll be ready to evolve or train by mid-game.
Best Locations
20 walking encounters at Lv. 3-26 for Spearow across Blue and Red. A few locations are version-exclusive, so your copy of the game affects what's available.
Spearow isn't fully evolved, so it's not built for competitive play. You'll want to evolve it into Fearow to unlock its full potential. At 262 BST, it's a stepping stone rather than a team anchor.
Watch for Raikou (Electric), Lapras (Ice), and Aerodactyl (Rock) when using Spearow. They all hit it super-effectively with STAB.
Spearow evolves into Fearow at level 20. Spearow is the base form of this evolutionary line.
Spearow fills the balanced role. It's a physical attacker with base 60 Attack. Base 70 Speed is workable — faster than some, slower than many. And it's fragile — can't afford to take many hits.
Spearow appears in 18 games, including Yellow, Red & Blue, and Gold & Silver.
Spearow has been part of the series since Red & Blue, appearing in 18 titles across all 9 generations. As a Gen 1 original, it's one of the most consistently available Pokemon in the franchise.
