HGSS rebuilds Gold and Silver on the Gen 4 engine with all 493 Pokemon. The physical/special split changes everything about the old Johto roster. Feraligatr finally uses its 105 Attack on physical Water moves. Gyarados gets the same upgrade. Two full regions of encounters to work with. Use the sidebar filters to compare stats and find the best picks for your team.

How to access additional Pokemon in HeartGold & SoulSilver

HGSS packs 256 species into the Johto Pokedex by merging Johto and Kanto Pokemon into one regional dex. Defeat Red on Mt. Silver (the real postgame boss) and you unlock access to Hoenn and Sinnoh species through several methods.

The Pokewalker peripheral has exclusive encounters you can't find any other way. The Safari Zone's block rearrangement system unlocks rare spawns after you place specific objects and wait real-world days. Gen 4 trades and Pal Park handle the rest.

  • 493 total across all four generations available at the time. The Johto regional dex covers 256 Pokemon. The National Dex unlocks after beating the Elite Four, adding Gen 3 and Gen 4 species that aren't native to Johto or Kanto.

  • Gen 4 engine means the physical/special split per move applies. Feraligatr can use physical Water moves now. Gyarados benefits from its 125 Attack on Waterfall. Pokemon follow you in the overworld. The Pokeathlon replaces the original game corner. Kanto is fully remade. And the music is remastered.

  • Totodile gets a major upgrade thanks to the physical/special split. Feraligatr's 105 Attack finally works with physical Water moves like Waterfall and Ice Punch. Cyndaquil is still solid. Chikorita is still the weakest option. The gen 4 move split makes Totodile the biggest winner.

  • Yes. Same as the originals, beating the Johto Elite Four opens up all of Kanto with 8 more gym leaders. Red waits on Mt. Silver after you collect all 16 badges. His team is in the high 80s with a Level 88 Pikachu. Hardest NPC fight in the series at the time.

  • Gen 4 remakes of Gold and Silver, released in 2009 for the Nintendo DS. They run on the Diamond/Pearl engine with the physical/special split per move. The 493 national dex is the same as DP/Platinum. Johto and Kanto are rebuilt from the ground up with DS graphics and a walking Pokemon feature.

  • HeartGold gets Ho-Oh early and SoulSilver gets Lugia early. Both are available in each version, but the version you pick determines which one you catch first. Lugia is the better defensive pick. Ho-Oh brings more offensive power. Same story, same Johto/Kanto content.
