The stat bars tell the story: Defense carries everything and Sp. Atk's dead weight. But this Iceberg Pokemon still yields 2 Defense EVs per fight on a medium-fast 1M XP curve.
As Avalugg walks along with Bergmite on its back, it comes across pods of Cetitan
This Pokémon uses its massive icy body to flatten anything that gets in its way. When it's floating out on the ocean, it looks exactly like drift ice.
Fighting, Steel, Water, Grass, Ground, and Rock moves hit Avalugg for super-effective damage. Fighting and Steel hits land at 4x, so they're the biggest threat. The Ice/Rock typing picks up 4 resistances to work with. Avalugg's physical bulk (base 184 Def) helps cushion physical weakness hits, but special attackers are the bigger threat.

Avalugg is what Bergmite becomes. Breed it for Bergmite eggs (average hatch time). Plenty of partners for breeding via two egg groups. Eggs are average hatch time. The evolution from Bergmite pushed Avalugg to 514 total stats. Defense saw the largest single gain at +99. View every chain in the Evolution Chart.
How to Evolve
Sturdy gives Avalugg passive value while it walls. Impish nature boosts Defense, max HP and Defense EVs maximize the physical wall profile, and Heavy-Duty Boots keeps it in the game.

The level-up pool is slim, so TMs matter here. Avalugg's Normal and Dark coverage and more all comes from technical machines, built on top of Meteor Beam and Blizzard for same-type damage. Take Down and Blizzard are the payoff moves.

In Scarlet & Violet, Avalugg looks average on paper at 514 BST. But Strong Jaw is why it sees play. Build around that and it pulls its weight. B-Tier wallbreaker on our tier list. Rapid Spin with Heavy-Duty Boots is the standard set.
In Scarlet & Violet, watch for Lucario (Fighting), Aegislash (Steel), and Milotic (Water) when using Avalugg. They all hit it super-effectively with STAB. Lucario is the most dangerous since Fighting moves deal 4x damage. Grass, Ground, and Rock-type attackers are also a problem. With 6 weakness types, most competitive teams carry at least one counter. At base 38 Speed, Avalugg won't outrun any of these threats so switching to a resist is usually the safer play.
Avalugg gets Strong Jaw, Ice Body, and Sturdy. But Strong Jaw is the one that matters. It's the centerpiece of every viable set. Build around that. On wall sets, Strong Jaw pairs with Avalugg's base 184 Defense to absorb physical hits on the switch.
Avalugg is leaning toward the physical side (base 127 Attack). Tanky enough to absorb a few hits, too. Speed tells the real story. Base 38 Speed is low. Priority moves or Trick Room are the way to go. Fits the wallbreaker role.
In Scarlet & Violet, run Rapid Spin, Bodypress, Recover, and Avalanche on Avalugg. Rapid Spin is the most common pick at 21% usage. Avalanche provides reliable STAB damage.
Available since X & Y, Avalugg appears in 8 games spanning 5 generations. Beyond its original form, it gained a Hisuian form in Generation 8.
