Is Mawile Good in FireRed & LeafGreen Playthrough?
Pure Steel in FRLG with AbilityHyper Cutter or AbilityIntimidate. Trade-only. Low stats and no evolution in Gen 3 limit what Mawile contributes. Intimidate is the useful ability on an otherwise weak Pokemon.

Mawile cannot be caught in this game. It must be traded in from a compatible game where it appears in the wild. On GBA, cross-region trading unlocks post-game after Celio's Sevii Islands Ruby & Sapphire quest. The Switch re-release supports only one-way transfers out to Pokemon HOME.

How to Get Mawile in FireRed & LeafGreen
Mawile is the Sapphire exclusive counterpart to Sableye. Available in Sapphire or Emerald's Granite Cave, the steel mouth type needs a trade from either of those games to reach FRLG.
Mawile cannot be caught in the wild in FireRed & LeafGreen, but you can still get it via these paths:
Pokemon HOME · Switch Rerelease
Playing the Switch version of FireRed & LeafGreen? Pokemon HOME compatibility is post-launch but deposit-only by design (FRLG → HOME). Inbound HOME transfer of Mawile into FRLG is not possible — an original GBA cartridge with a Link Cable is the only inbound route.
Catch in the wild and trade from these games:
Then trade to FireRed & LeafGreen.
Also Obtainable In:
Direct cartridge trade across generations isn't possible — but the Pokemon HOME path above bridges this gap once Switch support launches.
Mawile Weakness
Mawile's Steel typing leaves it vulnerable to Fire, Fighting, and Ground. It shrugs off Poison-type attacks completely. 11 resistances give it solid defensive coverage on top of that. Mawile's physical bulk (base 85 Def) helps cushion physical weakness hits, but special attackers are the bigger threat.
| Damage | Types |
|---|---|
| 2x (Weak) | Fire, Fighting, Ground |
| 0.5x (Resist) | Normal, Grass, Ice, Flying, Psychic, Bug, Rock, Ghost, Dragon, Dark, Steel |
| 0x (Immune) | Poison |
- Dark and Steel types added — Fairy does not exist yet
- Moves are Physical or Special based on type, not per move

Mawile Evolutions
Breeding is the whole story for Mawile. A decent partner pool through two egg groups, eggs are average hatch time, and you won't need to evolve anything. It's got 6 egg moves worth looking into. View every chain in the Evolution Chart.
How to Evolve
Breeding
Breed Mawile easily with 27 breeding partners from the Fairy and Ground egg groups. Pass egg moves like Ancient Power, False Swipe, Poison Fang and 3 more to offspring.
FRLG Mawile Best Moveset
Steel type in this format (no Fairy yet) resisting nine types. AbilityHyper Cutter prevents Attack drops from Intimidate and AbilityIntimidate cuts opponent Attack on switch-in. The moveset has defensive utility through typing and abilities, but 85 Attack at 50 Speed can't threaten the format's top tier.

Moves List
The natural movepool does the job, but Ancient Power and False Swipe from the egg pool give Mawile something extra. Pair those with Steel STAB for STAB and coverage across 9 types for reach, and the kit fills out nicely.
