Is Charmander Good in FireRed & LeafGreen Playthrough?
The hardest starter choice in FRLG and the most rewarding by the end. Brock and Misty both have the type advantage, so the opening gyms are a grind. AbilityBlaze adds a low-health Fire boost the originals never offered, making those early fights slightly less brutal. Everything opens up after Misty. Charizard runs through Erika, Koga, and most of the E4.
Brock's team hits Charmander's weaknesses hard.
Misty's team hits Charmeleon's weaknesses hard.
Charmeleon trades roughly evenly with Lt. Surge's team.

Charmander Evolutions
Three stages ahead. Charmander grows into Charmeleon, then pushes on to Charizard. Check the evolution methods below. For breeding, average hatch time with a decent partner pool via two egg groups. Evolving adds up to 225 stat points total. View every chain in the Evolution Chart.
How to Evolve
Breeding
Breed Charmander easily with 27 breeding partners from the Dragon and Monster egg groups. Pass egg moves like Ancient Power, Beat Up, Belly Drum and 5 more to offspring.
FRLG Charmander Best Moveset
Two evolutions from Charizard, with AbilityBlaze boosting Fire moves at low HP. Nothing competitive at base stats this low. The moveset at this stage is just passing through.

Moves List
Egg moves make a real difference. Charmander gets Ancient Power and Beat Up exclusively through breeding, filling gaps that TMs and level-up can't touch. Coverage across 8 types rounds out the picture alongside Overheat and Fire Blast.

A small dot on the icon's corner marks the move as contact. That triggers abilities like Static, Flame Body, Rough Skin, or Iron Barbs, plus items like Rocky Helmet and Sticky Barb.
Tier (S to D)
Each move's competitive rank in RankedBoost's system. TM, Egg, and Tutor sort by tier by default (best first). On Level-Up, click the Tier header to do the same.
PWR (Power)
Base damage. Numbers shown in a type color include STAB (base × 1.5). Hover any colored number to see the math.

Charmander FireRed & LeafGreen Guide
Charmander is the hardest starter for FireRed & LeafGreen if you want a Fire/Flying Pokemon on your team. Brock and Misty are brutal early gyms. Catch a Mankey on Route 22 or raise a Butterfree to bridge them. Charmeleon evolves into Charizard at level 36 and gains Wing Attack flying coverage, then cleans house from Surge onward. Erika folds to Fire moves and Blaine falls to Slash crits. Sabrina is the toughest matchup with no Psychic counter on the team. Slash and Earthquake handle most of the Elite Four. Charizard cleans up Bruno, but Lance's dragons need a teammate.
Game Availability
One of the original 151, Charmander has appeared in 21 games — nearly every mainline game. From Red & Blue through the latest titles, it's rarely been left out of a regional Pokedex.
