Stats & Training
Nothing fancy in Tyranitar's spread. It leans physical with Attack out front. And you'll get 3 Attack stat exp per KO for it. Follows a slow 1.25M XP grind.
In just one of its mighty hands, it has the power to make the ground shake and mountains crumble.
Tyranitar Weakness
Tyranitar is weak to Fighting, Water, Grass, Ground, Bug, and Steel. Watch out for Fighting attacks, those deal 4x damage. On the flip side, it's immune to Psychic-type moves entirely. It resists 6 types, so it can switch into a lot of moves safely. Tyranitar's overall bulk (100/110/100) lets it take a hit or two from most weaknesses before going down.
| Damage | Types |
|---|---|
| 4x (Critical) | Fighting |
| 2x (Weak) | Water, Grass, Ground, Bug, Steel |
| 0.5x (Resist) | Normal, Fire, Poison, Flying, Ghost, Dark |
| 0x (Immune) | Psychic |
- Dark and Steel types added — Fairy does not exist yet
- Moves are Physical or Special based on type, not per move
- Special stat split into Sp.Atk and Sp.Def
In Crystal, Aerodactyl's Earthquake hits Tyranitar for 41-48%.

The TM pool is where it gets interesting. Coverage across 10 types means almost nothing walls Tyranitar cleanly, with Crunch and Rock Slide anchoring the STAB side. Matchup flexibility isn't a problem.

Tyranitar Guide
In Crystal, Tyranitar works as a wallbreaker with 600 BST behind it. S-Tier on our list: one of the best picks in the Crystal meta. Rock Slide with Leftovers is the standard set.
Mega Evolution isn't available in Crystal, but Tyranitar does have a Mega form in Gen 6-7 games (X/Y, ORAS, Sun/Moon). Mega Tyranitar hits 700 BST.
In Crystal, Tyranitar's biggest threats include Machamp (Fighting), Gyarados (Water), and Exeggutor (Grass), all carrying super-effective STAB moves. Machamp is the most dangerous since Fighting moves deal 4x damage. Ground, Bug, and Steel-type attackers are also a problem. With 6 weakness types, most competitive teams carry at least one counter. Tyranitar has enough bulk to absorb a hit, but don't push the matchup. Pivot to a teammate that resists.
Tyranitar is a mixed attacker with base 134 Attack and 95 Sp. Atk. Tanky enough to absorb a few hits, too. Speed tells the real story. At base 61 Speed, it won't be moving first often. Fits the wallbreaker role.
In Crystal, the best way to handle Tyranitar: Status moves (Toxic, Will-O-Wisp) wear it down. Setup sweepers can use it as a boost opportunity. Special attackers bypass its physical bulk.
Game Availability
Available since Gold & Silver, Tyranitar appears in 18 games spanning 9 generations. Beyond its original form, it gained a Mega form in Generation 7.
