Between Flash Fire and Fire typing, Typhlosion carves out a strong competitive niche. It absorbs Fire moves and powers up its own, which gives it an edge most Pokemon in its stat range don't have. Clears the crowded base-100 Speed benchmark.

The stat budget goes to damage. Sp. Atk and Speed carry the offense, HP doesn't even come close. A Volcano Pokemon on a 1.06M XP medium-slow curve, worth 3 Sp. Atk EVs per KO.

TYPHLOSION obscures itself behind a shimmering heat haze that it creates using its intensely hot flames. This POKéMON creates blazing explosive blasts that burn everything to cinders.

Bulk and offense in one package. Typhlosion runs Leftovers for passive recovery each turn with a Hasty nature, so it survives long enough to threaten with Flamethrower. Max Sp. Atk and Speed EVs and utility options make it hard to safely switch into.

Without breeding, Typhlosion misses out on Covet and Crush Claw. That's 8 egg moves adding depth that the base kit lacks. STAB comes from Overheat and Fire Blast, with Normal and Flying coverage and more rounding things out.

No wild encounters for Typhlosion in Ruby & Sapphire. Bring Cyndaquil over from Gold, Crystal, or Legends: Arceus, then level through the stages. Each step in the chain is laid out below.

How to Obtain Typhlosion in Ruby & Sapphire

  1. Cyndaquil

Then trade to Ruby & Sapphire to continue the evolution chain.

  • Flash Fire changes the entire equation for Typhlosion. The 534 BST doesn't tell the full story. Ranked C-Tier as a sweeper.

  • Watch for Starmie (Water) and Golem (Ground) when using Typhlosion. They all hit it super-effectively with STAB. Rock-type attackers are also a problem.

  • Quilava evolves into Typhlosion at level 36. Typhlosion is the final evolution in a 4-stage line starting from Cyndaquil. At 534 BST, it's got solid stats to work with.

  • Flash Fire is what you want on Typhlosion. Every competitive set worth running is built with that ability in mind. The alternatives (Blaze) work on paper but Flash Fire is what makes Typhlosion worth using. With base 100 Speed, Flash Fire gives Typhlosion an edge before opponents can react.

  • Base 100 Speed lets it outrun most of the field. On offense, Typhlosion is a special attacker with base 109 Sp. Atk. Defensively? Enough bulk to take a hit or two. Best used as a sweeper.

  • Typhlosion appears in 17 games, including Gold & Silver, Crystal, and Ruby & Sapphire.

Since debuting in Gold & Silver, Typhlosion has appeared in 17 titles over 8 generations. Along the way, it received a Hisuian form in Generation 8, keeping it relevant across different competitive metas.
