Mid-stage Pokemon like Swadloon rarely see competitive play outside of special formats. It's a waypoint on the road to Leavanny, which is where the real potential kicks in. Introduced in Gen 5. Works well under Trick Room.
Bulk defines Swadloon's stat line. Defense and Sp. Def anchor the defensive side, but Speed can't keep up offensively. Common in the wild and worth 2 Defense EVs.
Forests where Swadloon live have superb foliage because the nutrients they make from fallen leaves nourish the plant life.
It protects itself from the cold by wrapping up in leaves. It stays on the move, eating leaves in forests.
Swadloon Weakness
FragileFire, Flying, Ice, Poison, Bug, and Rock-type moves hit Swadloon for super-effective damage. Fire and Flying hits land at 4x, so they're the biggest threat. 5 resistances help offset the weaknesses.
Partway through Sewaddle's chain. Swadloon still has another evolution ahead before reaching Leavanny. For breeding, quick to hatch with no compatible partners via one egg group. So far, Defense got the biggest boost (+20 from Sewaddle). The final form adds another 120 stats on top.
How to Evolve
Breed with Swadloon to get Sewaddle eggs easily from the Bug egg group. Notable egg moves include Agility, Air Slash, Baton Pass and 6 more.
Lead with Swadloon, set Sticky Web, and keep pressure on. Overcoat and Eviolite buy the time it needs, with max HP and Defense EVs letting it take hits while controlling the hazard game. Synthesis keeps it healthy between hits.

Without breeding, Swadloon misses out on Agility and Air Slash. That's 9 egg moves adding depth that the base kit lacks. STAB comes from Solar Beam and Energy Ball, with Normal and Psychic coverage and more rounding things out.

Step 2Swadloon ✓
Swadloon is meant to evolve into Leavanny. At 380 BST, the stats aren't there for competitive play yet. Pre-evolution Pokemon rarely hold up against fully evolved threats.
Watch for Arcanine (Fire), Aerodactyl (Flying), and Cloyster (Ice) when using Swadloon. They all hit it super-effectively with STAB. Arcanine is the most dangerous since Fire moves deal 4x damage. Poison, Bug, and Rock-type attackers are also a problem. With 6 weakness types, most competitive teams carry at least one counter.
Chlorophyll is what you want on Swadloon. Every competitive set worth running is built with that ability in mind. The alternatives (Leaf Guard, Overcoat) work on paper but Chlorophyll is what makes Swadloon worth using.
Base 42 Speed is low. Priority moves or Trick Room are the way to go. On offense, Swadloon is a special attacker with base 50 Sp. Atk. Defensively? Enough bulk to take a hit or two. Best used as a support.
Swadloon appears in 7 games, including Black & White, Black 2 & White 2, and X & Y.
Swadloon joined the series in Black & White and has been available in 7 titles so far. With 5 generations of appearances, it's established itself despite the later start.
