Stats & Training
Haunter's built around special offense. Special leads the charge, HP pays for it. Moderately hard to find, worth 2 Special stat exp. Follows a 1.06M XP medium-slow curve.
Because of its ability to slip through block walls, it is said to be from another dimension.
Because of its ability to slip through block walls, it is said to be from another dimension.
Haunter Weakness
Ground, Psychic, and Ghost moves hit Haunter for super-effective damage. The upside? Normal and Fighting-type moves can't touch it at all. Haunter's special bulk (base 115 Special) helps absorb special-type weaknesses, though physical moves exploit the lower Defense.
| Damage | Types |
|---|---|
| 2x (Weak) | Ground, Psychic, Ghost |
| 0.5x (Resist) | Grass |
| 0.25x (Resist) | Poison |
| 0x (Immune) | Normal, Fighting |
- Only 15 types exist — Dark, Steel, and Fairy are absent
- Ghost has no effect on Psychic (a known bug, fixed in Gen II)
- Special stat governs both offense and defense — no Sp.Atk / Sp.Def split

Without TMs, Haunter's movepool is bare bones. With them, you get Psychic and Normal coverage and more on top of Lick and Night Shade for STAB. The natural kit handles basics, but TMs are doing the real work.

Haunter Guide
In Red & Blue, Haunter isn't fully evolved, so it's not built for competitive play. You'll want to evolve it into Gengar to unlock its full potential. At 465 BST, it's a stepping stone rather than a team anchor.
In Red & Blue, watch for Rhydon (Ground), Alakazam (Psychic), and Misdreavus (Ghost) when using Haunter. They all hit it super-effectively with STAB.
In Red & Blue, Haunter fills the cannon role. It's a physical attacker with base 50 Attack. Base 95 Speed is workable. Faster than some, slower than many. And it's enough bulk to take a hit or two.
In Red & Blue, Haunter does the job early-game if you need a Ghost/Poison type on your team. Evolve it into Gengar before the later gyms and it holds up fine through the story.
Game Availability
Haunter has been part of the series since Red & Blue, appearing in 22 titles across all 10 generations. As a Gen 1 original, it's one of the most consistently available Pokemon in the franchise.
