Chespin sits at the start of its evolution line — not yet at full power, but that changes fast. Most trainers push through to Chesnaught as fast as possible. Flexible enough to run physical or special sets. Part of the Gen 6 roster.
Nothing fancy in Chespin's spread. It leans mixed with Defense out front. And you'll get 1 Defense EV per KO for it. Follows a 1.06M XP medium-slow curve.
The quills on its head are usually soft. When it flexes them, the points become so hard and sharp that they can pierce rock.
Such a thick shell of wood covers its head and back that even a direct hit from a truck wouldn’t faze it.
Chespin Weakness
FragileType-wise, Chespin takes extra damage from Fire, Ice, Poison, Flying, and Bug. The Grass typing picks up 4 resistances to work with.
Chespin kicks off a three-stage evolution line through Quilladin all the way to Chesnaught. For breeding, average hatch time with a massive partner pool via one egg group. Evolving adds up to 217 stat points total.
How to Evolve
Breed Chespin with 195 breeding partners from the Ground egg group. Pass egg moves like Belly Drum, Curse, Quick Guard and 4 more to offspring.
The build centers on Spikes and survivability. Eviolite means a bulk boost that only works before full evolution, and a spread EV build EVs give Chespin the bulk to set up repeatedly. Bulletproof adds another layer of staying power. Synthesis keeps it healthy between hits.

Hard to wall, honestly. Chespin threatens 12 types beyond its own STAB, with Rock and Dark standing out. Pair that with Leaf Storm and Wood Hammer and switchins need to think twice.

Chespin can't be caught in Scarlet & Violet. Bring it over from X instead. The encounter info below covers the source games.
At 313 BST, Chespin is firmly in pre-evolution territory. Evolve it into Quilladin before bringing it to any serious fight.
Chespin's biggest threats include Charizard (Fire), Cloyster (Ice), and Gengar (Poison), all carrying super-effective STAB moves. Flying and Bug-type attackers are also a problem. With 5 weakness types, most competitive teams carry at least one counter. At base 38 Speed, Chespin won't outrun any of these threats so switching to a resist is usually the safer play.
Chespin evolves into Quilladin at level 16. Chespin is the base form in a 3-stage evolutionary line.
Overgrow is the go-to ability for Chespin. It strengthens grass moves to inflict 1.5× damage at 1/3 max HP or less. Its hidden ability Bulletproof can work in specific setups.
Chespin is leaning toward the physical side (base 61 Attack). Fragile — can't afford to take many hits, too. But the speed tells the real story — base 38 Speed is low. Priority moves or Trick Room are the way to go. Fits the hazard setter role.
Chespin appears in 6 games, including X & Y, Omega Ruby & Alpha Sapphire, and Ultra Sun & Ultra Moon.
Since X & Y, Chespin has been obtainable in 6 games. A Generation 6 debut means a shorter history, but Chespin has appeared steadily across every generation since.
