Regenerator isn't flashy, but it matters. Combined with Rocky Helmet for chip damage on every physical hit received and HP-heavy investment EVs, Amoonguss fills the defensive wall slot reliably. Relaxed nature finishes the spread.

Amoonguss Guide

  • In X & Y, Don't let Amoonguss's 464 base stat total fool you. Regenerator is what makes it tick. It punches way above its weight class. We rate it A-Tier as a trick room. Spore with Rocky Helmet is the standard set.

  • In X & Y, watch for Arcanine (Fire), Walrein (Ice), and Staraptor (Flying) when using Amoonguss. They all hit it super-effectively with STAB. Psychic-type attackers are also a problem. At base 30 Speed, Amoonguss won't outrun any of these threats so switching to a resist is usually the safer play.

  • In X & Y, Run Regenerator on Amoonguss. It's the ability that defines how you build around it and the main reason it holds a competitive niche. Amoonguss also gets Effect Spore, but they don't compare.

  • In X & Y, Amoonguss fills the trick room role. It's leaning toward the physical side (base 85 Attack). Base 30 Speed is low. Priority moves or Trick Room are the way to go. And it's enough bulk to take a hit or two.

  • For X & Y, Amoonguss has answers, but so do you. Super-effective STAB from faster Pokemon is the simplest answer. Fire, Ice, and Flying-type attackers hit hardest.

Game Availability

Introduced in Black & White, Amoonguss has appeared in 9 games across 6 generations. Later debuts mean fewer total appearances, but it's been a consistent presence since its introduction.
