Mid-stage Pokemon like Wurmple rarely see competitive play outside of special formats. It's a waypoint on the road to Beautifly, which is where the real potential kicks in. Introduced in Gen 3. Only weak to Fire, Flying, and Rock.

An unusually even spread gives Wurmple flexibility. HP barely edges ahead. But Sp. Atk isn't far off. Easy to catch and follows a medium-fast 1M XP curve. Yields 1 HP EV.

Not a lot to pick from. Wurmple gets Bug Bite for same-type damage, and Normal and Poison coverage rounds things out. You're building around what's available rather than choosing from a deep bench.

  • Wurmple is meant to evolve into Silcoon. At 195 BST, the stats aren't there for competitive play yet. Pre-evolution Pokemon rarely hold up against fully evolved threats.

  • Watch for Arcanine (Fire), Salamence (Flying), and Golem (Rock) when using Wurmple. They all hit it super-effectively with STAB. At base 20 Speed, Wurmple won't outrun any of these threats so switching to a resist is usually the safer play.

  • Wurmple can evolve into Silcoon and Cascoon depending on the method. Wurmple is the base form in a 5-stage evolutionary line.

  • Shield Dust protects against incoming moves' extra effects — that's the one you want on Wurmple. Run Away is the hidden ability. Niche, but it has its uses.

  • Base 20 Speed is low. Priority moves or Trick Room are the way to go. On offense, Wurmple is a physical attacker with base 45 Attack. Defensively? Fragile — can't afford to take many hits.

  • Wurmple appears in 14 games, including Ruby & Sapphire, FireRed & LeafGreen, and Emerald.

Available in 14 titles since its debut in Ruby & Sapphire, Wurmple spans 7 generations of Pokemon games. It's accessible through catching or hatching as a base form in a solid number of games.
