Mid-stage Pokemon like Wurmple rarely see competitive play outside of special formats. It's a waypoint on the road to Beautifly, which is where the real potential kicks in. Introduced in Gen 3. Only weak to Fire, Flying, and Rock.
An unusually even spread gives Wurmple flexibility. HP barely edges ahead. But Sp. Atk isn't far off. Easy to catch and follows a medium-fast 1M XP curve. Yields 1 HP EV.
It loves to eat leaves. If it is attacked by a STARLY, it will defend itself with its spiked rear.
It spits a white silk that turns sticky when it contacts air. It is used to immobilize foes.
Wurmple Weakness
AvgFire, Flying, and Rock-type moves hit Wurmple for super-effective damage. Standard number of weaknesses for the Bug typing.
- Fairy type does not exist — Dragon has fewer checks
- Physical / Special split now per-move (introduced Gen IV)
From here, Wurmple's line branches into Silcoon and Cascoon. That's 2 possible evolutions, each with its own method. The evolved forms gain up to 200 total stats over Wurmple.

Not a lot to pick from. Wurmple gets Bug STAB for same-type damage, and Normal and Poison coverage rounds things out. You're building around what's available rather than choosing from a deep bench.

Best Locations
Before you go hunting for Wurmple, check which of the 46 spots belong to your version. Pearl and Diamond each have different headbutt and walking encounters at Lv. 5-15.
Wurmple is meant to evolve into Silcoon. At 195 BST, the stats aren't there for competitive play yet. Pre-evolution Pokemon rarely hold up against fully evolved threats.
Shield Dust protects against incoming moves' extra effects — that's the one you want on Wurmple. Run Away is the hidden ability. Niche, but it has its uses.
Base 20 Speed is low. Priority moves or Trick Room are the way to go. On offense, Wurmple is a physical attacker with base 45 Attack. Defensively? Fragile — can't afford to take many hits.
Wurmple appears in 14 games, including Ruby & Sapphire, FireRed & LeafGreen, and Emerald.
Available in 14 titles since its debut in Ruby & Sapphire, Wurmple spans 7 generations of Pokemon games. It's accessible through catching or hatching as a base form in a solid number of games.
