Mudkip sits at the start of its evolution line — not yet at full power, but that changes fast. Most trainers push through to Swampert as fast as possible. Only weak to Electric and Grass. Known as the Mud Fish Pokemon.
Mudkip's spread isn't flashy. Attack leads, Speed trails, 0 stats clear the bar. Tough to catch and worth 1 Attack EV, on a 1.06M XP medium-slow curve.
Its large tail fin propels it through water with powerful acceleration. It is strong in spite of its size.
To alert it, the fin on its head senses the flow of water. It has the strength to heft boulders.
Mudkip Weakness
GoodType-wise, Mudkip takes extra damage from Electric and Grass. It resists 4 types, giving it decent defensive coverage. Only 2 weaknesses makes it relatively easy to build around defensively.
Mudkip is the start of a three-stage chain. It evolves into Marshtomp first, then eventually reaches Swampert. For breeding, average hatch time with no compatible partners via two egg groups. Evolving adds up to 225 stat points total.
How to Evolve
Breed Mudkip easily from the Monster and Water1 egg groups. Pass egg moves like Ancient Power, Avalanche, Barrier and 14 more to offspring.

The egg pool carries weight here. Ancient Power and Avalanche aren't available any other way for Mudkip, and they meaningfully change what it threatens. Stack those on top of Hydro Pump and Surf for solid options.

Mudkip isn't fully evolved, so it's not built for competitive play. You'll want to evolve it into Marshtomp to unlock its full potential. At 310 BST, it's a stepping stone rather than a team anchor.
Mudkip evolves into Marshtomp at level 16. Mudkip is the base form in a 3-stage evolutionary line.
Torrent is the go-to ability for Mudkip. It strengthens water moves to inflict 1.5× damage at 1/3 max HP or less. Its hidden ability Damp can work in specific setups.
Mudkip fills the balanced role. It's a physical attacker with base 70 Attack. Base 40 Speed is low. Priority moves or Trick Room are the way to go. And it's fragile — can't afford to take many hits.
Mudkip appears in 16 games, including Ruby & Sapphire, FireRed & LeafGreen, and Emerald.
Mudkip first appeared in Ruby & Sapphire and has been available in 16 games across 7 generations. Obtainable through catching or hatching as a base form in most titles where it appears.
