Gastly sits at the start of its evolution line — not yet at full power, but that changes fast. Most trainers push through to Gengar as fast as possible. Normal and Fighting moves can't touch it, and only 3 types hit it super-effectively. Known as the Gas Pokemon.

Nothing fancy in Gastly's spread. It leans special with Sp. Atk out front. And you'll get 1 Sp. Atk EV per KO for it. Follows a 1.06M XP medium-slow curve.

Said to appear in decrepit, deserted buildings. It has no real shape as it appears to be made of a gas.

Gastly Weakness

Good

Gastly is weak to Ground, Psychic, and Ghost-type moves. On the flip side, it's immune to Normal and Fighting-type moves entirely. Gastly leans toward special offense (base 100 Sp.Atk) instead of trying to wall anything.

Gen I Type Chart
  • Only 15 types exist — Dark, Steel, and Fairy are absent
  • Ghost has no effect on Psychic (a known bug, fixed in Gen II)
  • Special stat governs both offense and defense — no Sp.Atk / Sp.Def split

Gastly evolves into Gengar, but can't breed. At 310 stats as a Ghost/Poison type, evolution is the only path. Evolving adds up to 190 stat points total.

For an attacker, Gastly wants flexible EVs EVs and an item. The a nature nature tilts toward balanced duty, and an ability contributes without taking a move slot.

Most of Gastly's flexibility comes from TMs. Same-type output runs through Lick and Night Shade, but Psychic and Normal and the rest of the TM pool push it from predictable to genuinely threatening.

  • At 310 BST, Gastly is firmly in pre-evolution territory. Evolve it into Haunter before bringing it to any serious fight.

  • Gastly's biggest threats include Golem (Ground), Starmie (Psychic), and Gengar (Ghost), all carrying super-effective STAB moves.

  • Gastly evolves into Haunter at level 25. Gastly is the base form in a 3-stage evolutionary line.

  • Gastly is a mixed attacker — base 35 Attack and 100 Sp. Atk. Fragile — can't afford to take many hits, too. But the speed tells the real story — base 80 Speed is workable — faster than some, slower than many. Fits the attacker role.

  • Gastly appears in 22 games, including Yellow, Red & Blue, and Gold & Silver.

Present since Red & Blue, Gastly appears in 22 games spanning 9 generations. Gen 1 originals like Gastly have the longest track record of availability in the series.
