Stats & Training

Special and Speed carry most of Zapdos's stat budget. Defense's the obvious dump stat. Near-impossible to catch and yields 3 Special stat exp. Follows a slow 1.25M XP grind.

Zapdos Weakness

Ice and Rock moves hit Zapdos for super-effective damage. The upside? Ground-type moves can't touch it at all. 4 resistances help offset the weaknesses. Zapdos's special bulk (base 125 Special) helps absorb special-type weaknesses, though physical moves exploit the lower Defense.

Zapdos Guide

  • For the Yellow meta, At 615 BST, Zapdos is built different. We rank it S-Tier. As a Legendary Pokemon, the raw stats back up the reputation. Best used as a setup sweeper. Drill Peck anchors the moveset.

  • In Yellow, watch for Cloyster (Ice) and Golem (Rock) when using Zapdos. They all hit it super-effectively with STAB. Only 2 weaknesses means fewer dedicated counters to worry about. Zapdos has enough bulk to absorb a hit, but don't push the matchup. Pivot to a teammate that resists.

  • Base 100 Speed lets it outrun most of the field. On offense, Zapdos is a mixed attacker with base 90 Attack and 125 Special. Defensively? Tanky enough to absorb a few hits. Best used as a setup sweeper.

  • For Yellow, Zapdos has answers, but so do you. Priority moves (Mach Punch, Aqua Jet, Ice Shard) bypass its speed. Bulky walls that resist its STAB also shut it down.

  • In Yellow, run Drill Peck, Thunderbolt, Thunder Wave, and Agility on Zapdos. Drill Peck is the most common pick at 25% usage. Thunderbolt provides reliable STAB damage. Agility lets it set up before sweeping.

Game Availability

First obtainable in Red & Blue, Zapdos has been featured in 20 titles across 10 generations. Legendary status means a single encounter per playthrough in most games.
