Grookey sits at the start of its evolution line — not yet at full power, but that changes fast. Most trainers push through to Rillaboom as fast as possible. Flexible enough to run physical or special sets. One of the newer additions from Gen 8.
Grookey's stats barely vary. 0 sit in respectable range with no real gaps. It's a blank slate for EV investment. Worth 1 Attack EV, 1.06M XP medium-slow curve to max.
When it uses its special stick to strike up a beat, the sound waves produced carry revitalizing energy to the plants and flowers in the area.
It attacks with rapid beats of its stick. As it strikes with amazing speed, it gets more and more pumped.
Grookey Weakness
FragileType-wise, Grookey takes extra damage from Fire, Ice, Poison, Flying, and Bug. It resists 4 types, giving it decent defensive coverage.
Grookey is the start of a three-stage chain. It evolves into Thwackey first, then eventually reaches Rillaboom. For breeding, average hatch time with a massive partner pool via two egg groups. Evolving adds up to 220 stat points total.
How to Evolve
Breed Grookey easily with 195 breeding partners from the Ground and Plant egg groups. Pass egg moves like Fake Out, Growth, Hammer Arm and 3 more to offspring.
Eviolite makes Grookey bulkier than you'd expect from something that still evolves. A spread EV build EVs with Jolly nature handle the stat profile. The remaining moves keeps it from being passive.

Recommended Teammates
The egg pool carries weight here. Fake Out and Growth aren't available any other way for Grookey, and they meaningfully change what it threatens. Stack those on top of Leaf Storm and Solar Blade for solid options.

Grookey is not available as a wild encounter in this game.
This is an event-exclusive or special distribution.
Grookey isn't fully evolved, so it's not built for competitive play. You'll want to evolve it into Thwackey to unlock its full potential. At 310 BST, it's a stepping stone rather than a team anchor.
Grookey evolves into Thwackey at level 16. Grookey is the base form in a 3-stage evolutionary line.
Overgrow is the go-to ability for Grookey. It strengthens grass moves to inflict 1.5× damage at 1/3 max HP or less. Its hidden ability Grassy Surge can work in specific setups.
Grookey fills the balanced role. It's a physical attacker with base 65 Attack. At base 65 Speed, it won't be moving first often. And it's fragile — can't afford to take many hits.
Grookey can be found in Scarlet & Violet and Sword & Shield.
Introduced in Sword & Shield, Grookey has appeared in 2 games across 2 generations. Later debuts mean fewer total appearances, but it's been a consistent presence since its introduction.
