Mid-stage Pokemon like Tympole rarely see competitive play outside of special formats. It's a waypoint on the road to Seismitoad, which is where the real potential kicks in. Introduced in Gen 5. Only weak to Electric and Grass.

An unusually even spread gives Tympole flexibility. Speed barely edges ahead. But Defense isn't far off. Easy to catch and follows a 1.06M XP medium-slow curve. Yields 1 Speed EV.

Graceful ripples running across the water’s surface are a sure sign that Tympole are singing in high-pitched voices below.

Sword

It uses sound waves to communicate with others of its kind. People and other Pokémon species can’t hear its cries of warning.

Tympole Weakness

Good

Tympole's Water typing leaves it vulnerable to Electric and Grass moves. 4 resistances help offset the weaknesses. Water Absorb grants an additional Water immunity, reshaping the matchup chart.

Three stages ahead. Tympole grows into Palpitoad, then pushes on to Seismitoad. Check the evolution methods below. For breeding, average hatch time with no compatible partners via one egg group. The evolved forms gain up to 215 total stats over Tympole.

No wild encounters for Tympole in Ultra Sun & Ultra Moon. It's available in Black, Omega Ruby, or Sword and can be transferred over. The details below show where to find it.

Tympole is not available as a wild encounter in this game.

Also found in:

  • Tympole is meant to evolve into Palpitoad. At 294 BST, the stats aren't there for competitive play yet. Pre-evolution Pokemon rarely hold up against fully evolved threats.

  • Watch for Rotom (Electric) and Venusaur (Grass) when using Tympole. They all hit it super-effectively with STAB. Only 2 weaknesses means fewer dedicated counters to worry about.

  • Tympole evolves into Palpitoad at level 25. Tympole is the base form in a 3-stage evolutionary line.

  • Swift Swim is what you want on Tympole. Every competitive set worth running is built with that ability in mind. The alternatives (Hydration, Water Absorb) work on paper but Swift Swim is what makes Tympole worth using.

  • At base 64 Speed, it won't be moving first often. On offense, Tympole is leaning toward the physical side (base 50 Attack). Defensively? Fragile — can't afford to take many hits.

  • Tympole appears in 7 games, including Black & White, Black 2 & White 2, and X & Y.

Tympole joined the series in Black & White and has been available in 7 titles so far. With 5 generations of appearances, it's established itself despite the later start.
