While most trainers evolve Spoink into Grumpig immediately, the unevolved form has a niche with Eviolite boosting its defenses. Only weak to Bug, Ghost, and Dark. The stat spread leans into special offense. Introduced in Gen 3.

Sp. Def and Sp. Atk carry most of Spoink's stat budget. Attack's the obvious dump stat. Easy to catch and yields 1 Sp. Def EV. Follows a fast 800K XP curve.

Spoink Weakness

Vulnerable

Bug, Ghost, and Dark-type moves hit Spoink for super-effective damage. Thick Fat reduces Fire/Ice damage, further improving the defensive spread. Spoink's special bulk (base 80 Sp.Def) helps absorb special-type weaknesses, though physical moves exploit the lower Defense.

One evolution ahead. Spoink grows into Grumpig through a straightforward two-stage chain. A massive partner pool for breeding via one egg group. Eggs are average hatch time. The evolved forms gain up to 140 total stats over Spoink.

Without breeding, Spoink misses out on Extrasensory and Future Sight. That's 4 egg moves adding depth that the base kit lacks. STAB comes from Future Sight and Dream Eater, with Normal and Flying coverage and more rounding things out.

Spoink can't be caught in FireRed & LeafGreen. Bring it over from Ruby, Emerald, or Scarlet instead. The encounter info below covers the source games.

Spoink is not available as a wild encounter in this game.

Catch in the wild in:

Then trade to FireRed & LeafGreen.

Also found in:

  • Spoink is meant to evolve into Grumpig. At 330 BST, the stats aren't there for competitive play yet. Pre-evolution Pokemon rarely hold up against fully evolved threats.

  • Watch for Pinsir (Bug), Gengar (Ghost), and Tyranitar (Dark) when using Spoink. They all hit it super-effectively with STAB.

  • Spoink evolves into Grumpig at level 32. Spoink is the base form of this evolutionary line.

  • Thick Fat is what you want on Spoink. Every competitive set worth running is built with that ability in mind. The alternatives (Own Tempo, Gluttony) work on paper but Thick Fat is what makes Spoink worth using.

  • At base 60 Speed, it won't be moving first often. On offense, Spoink is a special attacker with base 70 Sp. Atk.

  • Spoink appears in 15 games, including Ruby & Sapphire, FireRed & LeafGreen, and Emerald.

Available in 15 titles since its debut in Ruby & Sapphire, Spoink spans 7 generations of Pokemon games. It's accessible through catching or hatching as a base form in most mainline games.
