Helioptile doesn't have much going for it on its own — the stats just aren't there. The payoff is Heliolisk, and getting there is worth the grind. Known as the Generator Pokemon. Introduced in Gen 6.

Speed and Sp. Atk carry most of Helioptile's stat budget. Defense's the obvious dump stat. Common in the wild and yields 1 Speed EV. Follows a medium-fast 1M XP curve.

When spread, the frills on its head act like solar panels, generating the power behind this Pokémon’s electric moves.

Sword

The sun powers this Pokémon’s electricity generation. Interruption of that process stresses Helioptile to the point of weakness.

Shield

Helioptile Weakness

Good

Type-wise, Helioptile takes extra damage from Fighting and Ground. Ghost moves do nothing thanks to a full immunity. Dry Skin grants an additional Water immunity, reshaping the matchup chart.

Leveling does the heavy lifting. Helioptile picks up Thunderbolt and Thunder along the way, building toward a complete offensive set. TMs add coverage across 8 types, but the foundation's already strong by then.

No wild encounters for Helioptile in Legends: Z-A. It's available in X or Sword and can be transferred over. The details below show where to find it.

Helioptile is not available as a wild encounter in this game.

Also found in:

  • Helioptile is meant to evolve into Heliolisk. At 289 BST, the stats aren't there for competitive play yet. Pre-evolution Pokemon rarely hold up against fully evolved threats.

  • Helioptile's biggest threats include Conkeldurr (Fighting) and Landorus (Ground), all carrying super-effective STAB moves. Only 2 weaknesses means fewer dedicated counters to worry about.

  • Helioptile evolves into Heliolisk using a Sun Stone. Helioptile is the base form of this evolutionary line.

  • Dry Skin is what you want on Helioptile. Every competitive set worth running is built with that ability in mind. The alternatives (Sand Veil, Solar Power) work on paper but Dry Skin is what makes Helioptile worth using.

  • Base 70 Speed is workable — faster than some, slower than many. On offense, Helioptile is a special attacker with base 61 Sp. Atk. Defensively? Fragile — can't afford to take many hits.

  • Helioptile appears in 6 games, including X & Y, Omega Ruby & Alpha Sapphire, and Ultra Sun & Ultra Moon.

Helioptile joined the series in X & Y and has been available in 6 titles so far. With 4 generations of appearances, it's established itself despite the later start.
