Slow is good when Trick Room is up, and Appletun is about as slow as they come. Grass/Dragon typing gives it a defined role on the team. Thick Fat halves incoming Fire and Ice damage. Watch the Ice matchup though — quadruple damage means one hit can end it.
The stat line revolves around HP. Percentage recovery gets extra mileage here. Sp. Atk backs it up, though Speed doesn't pull its weight. Worth 2 HP EVs on a standard growth curve to max out.
It blasts its opponents with massive amounts of sweet, sticky nectar, drowning them under the deluge.
Due to Gigantamax energy, this Pokémon’s nectar has thickened. The increased viscosity lets the nectar absorb more damage than before.
Appletun Weakness
FragileType-wise, Appletun takes extra damage from Ice, Poison, Flying, Bug, Dragon, and Fairy. Watch out for Ice attacks, those deal 4x damage. The Grass/Dragon typing picks up 4 resistances to work with. Thick Fat reduces Fire/Ice damage, further improving the defensive spread.
Appletun is one of 3 ways Applin's chain can end. This one takes the item path, while the siblings go different directions. Breed through Applin to get eggs. Appletun and Flapple share the same 485 total stats, but they're distributed differently. Check the comparison below to see where each one specializes.
How to Evolve
Breed with Appletun to get Applin eggs easily using 60 partners from the Dragon and Plant egg groups. Notable egg moves include Defense Curl, Recycle, Rollout and 1 more.
Nothing fancy here. Appletun builds around Ganlonberry for extra utility, Calm nature for the right stat lean, and max HP and Sp. Def EVs. Ripen does its job quietly.

The egg pool carries weight here. Defense Curl and Recycle aren't available any other way for Appletun, and they meaningfully change what it threatens. Stack those on top of Outrage and Solar Beam for solid options.

Appletun looks average on paper at 485 BST. But Thick Fat is why it sees play — build around that and it pulls its weight. C-Tier support on our tier list.
Appletun's biggest threats include Walrein (Ice), Crobat (Poison), and Staraptor (Flying), all carrying super-effective STAB moves. Walrein is the most dangerous since Ice moves deal 4x damage. Bug, Dragon, and Fairy-type attackers are also a problem. With 6 weakness types, most competitive teams carry at least one counter. At base 30 Speed, Appletun won't outrun any of these threats so switching to a resist is usually the safer play.
Appletun gets Thick Fat, Ripen, and Gluttony. But Thick Fat is the one that matters — it's the centerpiece of every viable set. Build around that.
Appletun is leaning toward the special side (base 100 Sp. Atk). Enough bulk to take a hit or two, too. But the speed tells the real story — base 30 Speed is low. Priority moves or Trick Room are the way to go. Fits the support role.
Appletun can be found in Scarlet & Violet and Sword & Shield.
Available since Sword & Shield, Appletun appears in 2 games spanning 2 generations. Beyond its original form, it gained a Gigantamax form in Generation 8.
