Altering CaveFireRed&LeafGreen

"Altering Cave is the Sevii Islands' most famous dead end. Game Freak built it for a Nintendo e-Reader feature that never really arrived, leaving the place with a single resident: Zubat. It's more trivia than dungeon."

Zubat is the only catch here, a flat 100% from Lv 6 to 16. The cave was meant to rotate in rarer species like Mareep and Houndour, but none ever became obtainable, so there's nothing else to hunt. Grab one if you want an early Zubat, otherwise skip the trip.

Altering Cave Guide

  • Altering Cave was built around the Nintendo e-Reader accessory. Scanning a special card would swap its wild encounters to a rare Pokemon, but the cards saw almost no release outside Japan and the accessory is long gone. Without one, only Zubat shows up.

  • No. The 2026 Switch release of FireRed and LeafGreen is a faithful port, so Altering Cave is still Zubat-only. The e-Reader was Game Boy Advance hardware with no Switch equivalent, and nothing replaces it: no event, no Mystery Gift, no online unlock, no Pokemon HOME trick.

  • Eight Johto Pokemon were each tied to their own e-Reader card: Mareep, Pineco, Houndour, Teddiursa, Aipom, Shuckle, Stantler, and Smeargle. None of them are catchable anywhere else in FireRed or LeafGreen, which is what made the cave special on paper. The cards never had a wide release, so they stayed a what-if.

  • Depends on what you're after. Repels block encounters below your lead Pokemon's level, so a level 20 lead in Rock Tunnel filters out the common level 15-16 Zubat while still triggering rarer spawns. If you're grinding, skip them. If you're just passing through, they save time and healing items.

  • Only Rock Tunnel is completely dark without Flash. Every other cave in FRLG is fully lit by default. Flash itself comes from Oak's aide on Route 2, and you only need 10 Pokedex entries to claim it.

  • Escape Rope warps you to the last entrance you used and costs 550 at most Poke Marts. The move Dig does the same thing for free if a Pokemon on your team knows it. Both work in any cave or dungeon in the game.

  • Islands One through Three unlock after you beat Blaine on Cinnabar Island. Bill takes you there as part of the story. Islands Four through Seven require beating the Elite Four first, then completing Celio's Ruby and Sapphire quest on One Island to get the Rainbow Pass.

  • You can physically reach all seven islands without it, but evolved Johto Pokemon only show up in the wild after you get the National Dex. That means 60 or more Pokedex entries plus completing Celio's quest. If you're only seeing Kanto species, that's why.
