Grass is the backbone of most habitats in Pokopia. You grow it using the Leafage move on bare ground, then pick it up with Rototiller and place it where you need it. The color of the grass depends on which region you're in when you use Leafage — Rocky Ridges gives you Red Tall Grass, Sparkling Skylands gives you Pink, and so on. Four patches is the standard for most grass habitats, and some require specific colors.
Steps#
- Unlock the Leafage move (available early in the game).
- Walk to a patch of bare dirt and use Leafage (ZR) to grow one square of tall grass.
- The grass color matches the region you're in. See below for details on each color.
- Use Rototiller to pick up the grass and store it in your inventory. You can move it anywhere on your island.
- Place 4 matching grass patches near each other to form a grass habitat. Most grass habitats need exactly 4.
- For Hydrated variants, use Water Gun on the grass or place it next to a water source.
- For Dry Tall Grass, use Leafage on unwatered ground — don't water it afterward since you can't dry it out once wet.
- For Elevated variants, place grass on raised terrain or High-Up Locations.
Green Tall Grass
Use Leafage on bare dirt in Meadow areas. Green is the default color and the first you unlock.
Red Tall Grass
Use Leafage in the Rocky Ridges region. Pick it up with Rototiller to bring it back to your island.
Pink Tall Grass
Use Leafage in the Sparkling Skylands. This is a late-game color that unlocks after raising your environment level.
Yellow Tall Grass
Use Leafage in marshy or swamp areas. Pick it up with Rototiller to move it where you need it.
Dry Tall Grass
Use Leafage on unwatered ground. Do not water Dry Tall Grass once placed or it will revert permanently.
Habitats You Can Build With Grass
Switch between grass colors to see which habitats you can build with each type.
Most grass habitats need exactly 4 patches. That goes for every color — 4 Tall Grass, 4 Red Tall Grass, 4 Pink Tall Grass, and so on. Fancier variants like Hydrated or Tree-Shaded habitats still need 4 grass plus extra materials like Water or a Large Tree.
The color depends on which region you use Leafage in. Regular green grass grows in the starting areas, Red Tall Grass comes from Rocky Ridges, Pink Tall Grass from Sparkling Skylands, and Yellow Tall Grass from marsh areas. Use Rototiller to pick it up and move it to your island.
No. Once grass is placed, its color is set. If you need a different color, travel to the right region, grow new grass there with Leafage, pick it up with Rototiller, and bring it back. Palette Town in multiplayer is the only place where all colors grow regardless of biome.
Dry Tall Grass is what you get when you use Leafage on ground that hasn't been watered. It's needed for the Smooth Tall Grass habitat that attracts Onix. Be careful not to accidentally water it — once wet, there's no way to dry it out again, and you'd need to grow new dry grass from scratch.
Leafage grows new grass on bare ground, one square at a time. Rototiller picks up existing plants (grass, flowers, crops) and puts them in your inventory so you can move them. You need both — Leafage to create grass, Rototiller to relocate it to where your habitat needs it.
