Tyrunt Guide

  • Tyrunt isn't fully evolved, so it's not built for competitive play. You'll want to evolve it into Tyrantrum to unlock its full potential. At 362 BST, it's a stepping stone rather than a team anchor.

  • Tyrunt's biggest threats include Cloyster (Ice), Blaziken (Fighting), and Swampert (Ground), all carrying super-effective STAB moves. Dragon, Steel, and Fairy-type attackers are also a problem. With 6 weakness types, most competitive teams carry at least one counter.

  • Run Strong Jaw on Tyrunt. It's the ability that defines how you build around it and the main reason it holds a competitive niche. Tyrunt also gets Sturdy, but they don't compare.

  • Tyrunt fills the balanced role. It's a physical attacker with base 89 Attack. Base 48 Speed is low. Priority moves or Trick Room are the way to go.

  • Tyrunt does the job early-game if you need a Rock/Dragon type on your team. Evolve it into Tyrantrum before the later gyms and it holds up fine through the story.

Game Availability

Introduced in X & Y, Tyrunt has appeared in 6 games across 5 generations. Later debuts mean fewer total appearances, but it's been a consistent presence since its introduction.
