Typhlosion Best Moveset
109 Sp. Atk at 100 Speed on Fire with AbilityFlash Fire granting Fire immunity and boosting Fire damage. Held ItemChoice Scarf pushes Speed to outrun everything, and NatureTimid compounds the pace. The moveset fires special Fire TermStab and coverage moves locked to one choice. Tera Fire under Flash Fire boost makes the damage absurd.
109 Sp. Atk matched Charizard in Gen II (Gold & Silver). Pure Fire typing meant no 4x weaknesses, and Fire Blast hit hard before Stealth Rock existed to punish it.

Eruption at full HP was a 150-power Fire STAB in Gen III (Ruby & Sapphire). Nothing wanted to be on the receiving end of a healthy Typhlosion's opening move.
Special Sweeper Moveset
- Flamethrower
- Thunder Punch
- Hidden Power Grass
- Substitute
Recommended Teammates
Stealth Rock showed up in Gen IV (Diamond & Pearl) and directly nerfed Eruption. 25% HP lost on entry meant Eruption's power dropped before Typhlosion even attacked. Double penalty.
Special Sweeper Moveset
- Eruption
- Focus Blast
- Flamethrower
- Hidden Power Grass
Recommended Teammates
Choice Scarf Eruption worked as a lead in Gen V (Black & White). Fire off max-power Eruption before taking any damage, then switch out. Simple but effective.
Special Revenge Killer Moveset
- Fire Blast
- Extrasensory
- Hidden Power Grass
- Focus Blast
Recommended Teammates
Same Choice Scarf Eruption strategy in Gen VI (X & Y). Not versatile, but 150-power STAB at full HP was strong enough to earn a niche.
Special Revenge Killer Moveset
- Extrasensory
- Eruption
- Earthquake
- Fire Blast
Recommended Teammates
Fell in Gen VII (Sun & Moon). Eruption was still strong but Typhlosion was too predictable. Opponents knew the exact set before the match started.
Special Revenge Killer Moveset
- Eruption
- Focus Blast
- Extrasensory
- Fire Blast

Returned in Gen IX (Scarlet & Violet). Hisuian Typhlosion (Fire/Ghost) had better typing and tools. The regular form was the inferior version now.

- Eruption
- Scorching Sands
- Flamethrower
- Focus Blast

The stat budget goes to damage. Sp. Atk and Speed carry the offense, HP doesn't even come close. A Volcano Pokemon on a 1.06M XP medium-slow curve, worth 3 Sp. Atk EVs per KO.
It attacks using blasts of fire. It creates heat shimmers with intense fire to hide itself.
Typhlosion Guide
Flash Fire changes the entire equation for Typhlosion. The 534 BST doesn't tell the full story. Ranked C-Tier as a sweeper.
Flash Fire is what you want on Typhlosion. Every competitive set worth running is built with that ability in mind. The alternatives (Blaze) work on paper but Flash Fire is what makes Typhlosion worth using. With base 100 Speed, Flash Fire gives Typhlosion an edge before opponents can react.
Base 100 Speed lets it outrun most of the field. On offense, Typhlosion is a special attacker with base 109 Sp. Atk. Defensively? Enough bulk to take a hit or two. Best used as a sweeper.
Run Eruption, Scorching Sands, Flamethrower, and Focus Blast on Typhlosion. Eruption is the most common pick at 0% usage. Eruption provides reliable STAB damage.
