Tropius Best Moveset
Grass/Flying at 99 HP with 72 Sp. Atk and 51 Speed. AbilityHarvest recovers consumed berries 50% of the time (100% under sun). AbilityChlorophyll doubles Speed under sun. AbilitySolar Power boosts Sp. Atk 50% under sun. All three abilities need sun. The moveset is sun-dependent across every option, and even in sun, the stats don't compete.
Grass/Flying with 460 BST in Gen III (Ruby & Sapphire). 4x Ice weakness on a Pokemon with no stat above 99. Solar Power needed sun that rarely came.

Leaf Storm from 72 Sp. Atk in Gen IV (Diamond & Pearl) was weak. Tropius worked as a bulky Roost and Leech Seed pivot, not an attacker.

Harvest recycled Sitrus Berry in sun in Gen V (Black & White). Infinite healing while sun lasted. The best niche Tropius ever found, but sun-dependent.
Wall Moveset
- Air Slash
- Substitute
- Leech Seed
- Whirlwind
Recommended Teammates
Sun nerfed to 5 turns in Gen VI (X & Y). Harvest lost the infinite engine. Without permanent sun, Tropius had 460 BST and nothing else.
Wall Moveset
- Leech Seed
- Air Slash
- Giga Drain
- Protect

Grass/Flying with 4x Ice weakness in Gen VII (Sun & Moon). No offensive stat above 72. Tropius tanked hits from types that rarely appeared and lost to everything else.
Wall Moveset
- Leech Seed
- Air Slash
- Protect

Six gens of a typing that worked in theory in Gen IX (Scarlet & Violet). Ground immunity was nice. Everything else about the stats was not.

Tropius Weakness
Ice, Fire, Poison, Flying, and Rock moves hit Tropius for super-effective damage. Ice hits land at 4x, so they're the biggest threat. The upside? Ground-type moves can't touch it at all.
| Damage | Types |
|---|---|
| 4x (Critical) | Ice |
| 2x (Weak) | Fire, Poison, Flying, Rock |
| 0.5x (Resist) | Water, Fighting |
| 0.25x (Resist) | Grass |
| 0x (Immune) | Ground |

Base Stats
Tropius's spread favors balanced defenses over offense. HP leads the defensive side, Speed eats the cost. Yields 2 HP EVs per defeat. Slow 1.25M XP grind to level.
Delicious fruits grew out from around its neck because it always ate the same kind of fruit.
Tropius Guide
Don't let Tropius's 460 base stat total fool you. Chlorophyll is what makes it tick. It punches way above its weight class. We rate it C-Tier.
Watch for Lapras (Ice), Charizard (Fire), and Nidoking (Poison) when using Tropius. They all hit it super-effectively with STAB. Lapras is the most dangerous since Ice moves deal 4x damage. Flying and Rock-type attackers are also a problem. With 5 weakness types, most competitive teams carry at least one counter.
Run Chlorophyll on Tropius. It's the ability that defines how you build around it and the main reason it holds a competitive niche. Tropius also gets Solar Power and Harvest, but they don't compare.
Tropius fills the balanced role. It's a special attacker with base 72 Sp. Atk. At base 51 Speed, it won't be moving first often. And it's enough bulk to take a hit or two.
Run Substitute, Leech Seed, Protect, and Curse on Tropius. Substitute is the most common pick at 0% usage. Curse lets it set up before sweeping.
