Is Garchomp Good in Ultra Sun & Ultra Moon Playthrough?

600 BST Dragon/Ground with speed that outpaces almost everything. MoveEarthquake devastates Molayne's entire E4 team, Dragon handles Kahili's Mandibuzz. If you can evolve Gible before the E4, Garchomp is one of the best Pokemon you can bring. The grind is steep but the payoff is massive.

Garchomp Weakness

Ice, Dragon, and Fairy moves hit Garchomp for super-effective damage. Ice hits land at 4x, so they're the biggest threat. The upside? Electric-type moves can't touch it at all. Garchomp's overall bulk (108/115/95) lets it take a hit or two from most weaknesses before going down.

Its arms and wings melted into something like scythes. Mad with rage, it rampages on and on.

Its disposition is more vicious than before its Mega Evolution. Garchomp carves its opponents up with the scythes on both arms.

Garchomp Ultra Sun & Ultra Moon Guide

  • For Ultra Sun & Ultra Moon, we rate Garchomp A-Tier: a strong pick in Ultra Sun & Ultra Moon's competitive scene. At 700 BST, it fits the wallbreaker role. Earthquake with Rocky Helmet is the standard set.

  • In Ultra Sun & Ultra Moon, Garchomp can Mega Evolve into Mega Garchomp. That's 800 BST, up from 700. The stat redistribution often changes its best role. Mega Stone required, one per battle.

  • In Ultra Sun & Ultra Moon, watch for Cloyster (Ice), Kingdra (Dragon), and Togekiss (Fairy) when using Garchomp. They all hit it super-effectively with STAB. Cloyster is the most dangerous since Ice moves deal 4x damage. Garchomp has enough bulk to absorb a hit, but don't push the matchup. Pivot to a teammate that resists.

  • Sand Force strengthens rock, ground, and steel moves to 1.3× their power during a sandstorm. That's the one you want on Garchomp. It's the only ability Garchomp has.

  • Base 92 Speed is workable. Faster than some, slower than many. On offense, Garchomp is a physical attacker with base 170 Attack. Defensively? Tanky enough to absorb a few hits. Best used as a wallbreaker.

Game Availability

Since debuting in Diamond & Pearl, Garchomp has appeared in 14 titles over 7 generations. Along the way, it received a Mega form in Generation 6, keeping it relevant across different competitive metas.
