How to Get Garchomp in Sun & Moon
Can't catch Garchomp directly. Start with Gible in the wild from the locations below, then evolve at level 48. The 3-stage chain from Gible to Garchomp is where the leveling time goes.
Garchomp Weakness
Ice, Dragon, and Fairy moves hit Garchomp for super-effective damage. Ice hits land at 4x, so they're the biggest threat. The upside? Electric-type moves can't touch it at all. Garchomp's overall bulk (108/115/95) lets it take a hit or two from most weaknesses before going down.
| Damage | Types |
|---|---|
| 4x (Critical) | Ice |
| 2x (Weak) | Dragon, Fairy |
| 0.5x (Resist) | Fire, Poison, Rock |
| 0x (Immune) | Electric |

Excess energy melted its arms and wings, transforming them into giant scythes.
Its vaunted wings become scythes, sending it mad with rage. It swings its scythes wildly and slices the ground to pieces.
Garchomp Sun & Moon Guide
For Sun & Moon, we rate Garchomp A-Tier: a strong pick in Sun & Moon's competitive scene. At 700 BST, it fits the wallbreaker role. Earthquake with Rocky Helmet is the standard set.
In Sun & Moon, Garchomp can Mega Evolve into Mega Garchomp. That's 800 BST, up from 700. The stat redistribution often changes its best role. Mega Stone required, one per battle.
In Sun & Moon, watch for Cloyster (Ice), Kingdra (Dragon), and Togekiss (Fairy) when using Garchomp. They all hit it super-effectively with STAB. Cloyster is the most dangerous since Ice moves deal 4x damage. Garchomp has enough bulk to absorb a hit, but don't push the matchup. Pivot to a teammate that resists.
Sand Force strengthens rock, ground, and steel moves to 1.3× their power during a sandstorm. That's the one you want on Garchomp. It's the only ability Garchomp has.
Base 92 Speed is workable. Faster than some, slower than many. On offense, Garchomp is a physical attacker with base 170 Attack. Defensively? Tanky enough to absorb a few hits. Best used as a wallbreaker.
Game Availability
Since debuting in Diamond & Pearl, Garchomp has appeared in 14 titles over 7 generations. Along the way, it received a Mega form in Generation 6, keeping it relevant across different competitive metas.
