Is Garchomp Good in Omega Ruby & Alpha Sapphire Playthrough?

Garchomp at 600 BST with 130 Attack and 102 Speed tears through most of ORAS. Dragon/Ground coverage handles Wattson, Flannery, and chunks of Steven's roster. Can Mega Evolve for even more power. The Dragon slot in Hoenn is competitive (Salamence, Flygon), but Garchomp holds its own against both.

Garchomp Weakness

Ice, Dragon, and Fairy moves hit Garchomp for super-effective damage. Ice hits land at 4x, so they're the biggest threat. The upside? Electric-type moves can't touch it at all. Garchomp's overall bulk (108/115/95) lets it take a hit or two from most weaknesses before going down.

When it folds up its body and extends its wings, it looks like a jet plane. It flies at sonic speed.

It flies at speeds equal to a jet fighter plane. It never allows its prey to escape.

Garchomp Omega Ruby & Alpha Sapphire Guide

  • For Omega Ruby & Alpha Sapphire, we rate Garchomp S-Tier: one of the best picks in the Omega Ruby & Alpha Sapphire meta. At 700 BST, it fits the wallbreaker role. Earthquake with Rocky Helmet is the standard set.

  • In Omega Ruby & Alpha Sapphire, Garchomp can Mega Evolve into Mega Garchomp. That's 800 BST, up from 700. The stat redistribution often changes its best role. Mega Stone required, one per battle.

  • In Omega Ruby & Alpha Sapphire, watch for Cloyster (Ice), Kingdra (Dragon), and Togekiss (Fairy) when using Garchomp. They all hit it super-effectively with STAB. Cloyster is the most dangerous since Ice moves deal 4x damage. Garchomp has enough bulk to absorb a hit, but don't push the matchup. Pivot to a teammate that resists.

  • Sand Force strengthens rock, ground, and steel moves to 1.3× their power during a sandstorm. That's the one you want on Garchomp. It's the only ability Garchomp has.

  • Base 92 Speed is workable. Faster than some, slower than many. On offense, Garchomp is a mixed attacker with base 170 Attack and 120 Sp. Atk. Defensively? Tanky enough to absorb a few hits. Best used as a wallbreaker.

Game Availability

Since debuting in Diamond & Pearl, Garchomp has appeared in 14 titles over 7 generations. Along the way, it received a Mega form in Generation 6, keeping it relevant across different competitive metas.
