Dragon/Flying at 105 Sp. Def with AbilityNatural Cure clearing status every switch. Held ItemHeavy Duty Boots blocks TermEntry Hazards damage. NatureModest at 70 Sp. Atk fires Dragon and Flying TermStab between defensive pivots. The moveset is a special answer that heals status passively. C-Tier for the sustained durability and Natural Cure utility.
Dragon/Flying with Natural Cure healed status on switch in Gen III (Ruby & Sapphire). Dragon Dance into Earthquake and Dragon Claw could sweep once counters were gone.

Same Dragon Dance formula in Gen IV (Diamond & Pearl). Roost for recovery, Natural Cure kept it free of Toxic. Consistent if not spectacular.
Physical Tank Moveset

- Dragon Claw
- Roost

Power creep hit in Gen V (Black & White). 70 Attack was too low to sweep even after Dragon Dance. Stronger Dragon-types eclipsed it completely.
Wall Moveset
- Dragon Dance

Mega Altaria became Dragon/Fairy with Pixilate in Gen VI (X & Y) and was incredible. Base Altaria without the Mega Stone was completely irrelevant.
Support Moveset
- Roost
- Haze
- Heal Bell
- Dazzling Gleam

Mega Altaria was decent but base form dropped to the bottom in Gen VII (Sun & Moon). Dragon/Flying with 70 offenses had no competitive niche.
Bulky Support Moveset
- Earthquake

No Mega form in Gen VIII (Sword & Shield). Just a fluffy Dragon with stats too low to compete in any format.
Bulky Support Moveset

Found a small niche in Gen IX (Scarlet & Violet). Cotton Guard plus Roost gave it a physical walling set in lower tiers.

Altaria Weakness
Type-wise, Altaria takes extra damage from Ice, Poison, Steel, and Fairy. Dragon moves do nothing thanks to a full immunity. With 7 resistances, the defensive profile is strong. Altaria's overall bulk (75/110/105) lets it take a hit or two from most weaknesses before going down.
| Damage | Types |
|---|---|
| 2x (Weak) | Ice, Poison, Steel, Fairy |
| 0.5x (Resist) | Fire, Water, Electric, Grass, Fighting, Bug, Dark |
| 0x (Immune) | Dragon |

Base Stats
Attack and Defense carry most of Altaria's stat budget. HP's the obvious dump stat. Tough to catch and yields 2 Sp. Def EVs. Follows a standard growth curve.
Its down is so soft, it seems as if a touch could melt it. But it's strong enough that just a few strands could be used to hoist a dump truck.
Altaria Guide
We rate Altaria C-Tier: a situational pick that fills a niche. At 590 BST, it fits the support role. Base 110 Attack stands out.
Altaria can Mega Evolve into Mega Altaria. That's 690 BST, up from 590. The stat redistribution often changes its best role. Mega Stone required, one per battle.
Pixilate is the go-to ability for Altaria. It turns the bearer's normal moves into fairy moves and strengthens them to 1.3× their power. It's Altaria's only ability.
Base 80 Speed is workable. Faster than some, slower than many. On offense, Altaria is a mixed attacker with base 110 Attack and 110 Sp. Atk. Defensively? Tanky enough to absorb a few hits. Best used as a support.
Game Availability
Since debuting in Ruby & Sapphire, Altaria has appeared in 16 titles over 8 generations. Along the way, it received a Mega form in Generation 6, keeping it relevant across different competitive metas.
